Mr Clifford Jennings, who has been on a visit to Christchurch, returned by the express last evening. The appointment of Mr T. Jordan, a Masterton solicitor, to be acting chairman of the Transport Appeal Board during the absence of Mr Justice Frazer was Gazetted last night. Mr D. Caithness, of Christchurch,’ has been appointed dredgemaster and engineer for the Nevis Diesel Electric Dredging Company, Limited, and. will take up his duties on August 1. Upon receipt of advice of the death of his father at Dunedin, Mr Herbert Smith, the prominent Star Club Rugby player, left for Dunedin. He travelled by the express yesterday morning. Mr W. Downic Stewart, M.P., accompanied by Miss Stewart, will leave Dunedin on Thursday next for- Auckland, where they will join the Aorangi for Canada. The purpose of _Mr Stewart's trip is to attend in a private capacity, two conferences in Canada. The first is on Pacific relations _at Banff, and he then proceeds to the international affairs conference at Toronto. He is due to arrive back in Auckland on October 30. The death occurred in Dunedin on Monday of Mr Bertram Allison. The deceased, who was a son of the late Mr Thomas Allison, a solicitor, of Wanganui, was educated at the Wanganui Collegiate School, and during the early part cf his life was engaged in farming pursuits in the Wanganui district. Later he joined the organization of the Colonial Motor Company, and three years ago was appointed general manager of Ford Motors, Dunedin, Ltd. He resided in Dunedin up till the time of his death. He leaves a widow and a family of two daughters and one son. The deceased in his younger days took an active interest in Rugby football and in rowing, and was an enthusiastic member of the Dunedin Rotary Club. Although of a retiring nature, he made many friends in Dunedin, and his funeral, which took place on Wednesday, was largely attended.— Otago Daily Times.
