BY BEACH TO RIVERTON.

To the Editor.

Sir, —A few years ago in the Times, someone suggested putting a bridge over the Waimatuku at the beach. At that time there was no bridge over the Oreti at Otatara and the beach was not patronized to anything like the extent it is to-day. Many visitors to Invercargill who Wish to avail themselves of the services of a taxi to see some of the local attractions are often taken as far as the beach via Otatara and back by the Bay Road. If there was a bridge over the Waimatuku, the drive to Riverton via the beach, returning by the road, would be most attractive. The cost of the bridge should be small as gravel and sand for the concrete work is on the spot. The river would be directed straight into the sea and a low groin on the South side to prevent the sand diverting it would ensure its permanency. Surely it would be wiser to spend a couple of hundred on such a work which would be useful, than a couple of million on such a wild cat scheme as a road to Milford Sound.—l am, etc., ORETI.
