RETURNED SOLDIERS

GORE ASSOCIATION. At the fortnightly meeting of the executive of the Gore Returned Soldiers’ Association on Tuesday night there were present: Messrs T. Fyfe (president, in the chair), P. R. Stewart, M. Green, J. Robertson, W. D. Shelton, F. M. Murray, S. Paterson, E. J. Columb, A. L. McDowell, L. Roberts, R. B. Bannerman and G. L. Gerken (secretary). The president moved votes of condolence and sympathy with Mr H. Inder in the recent loss of his father and Mr D. Latham in the recent loss of his brother. These were passed, members standing in silence.

The hospital visiting sub-committee reported tha one member was visited at his home and three at the hospital on each Sunday. The committee was thanked for its report, and Messrs Wilson and Columb were appointed a visiting committee for the next term. Two new members were elected to the association. The secretary reported that the financial membership now stood at 200, as compared with 177 last meeting night and 186 at the corresponding period last year. The secretary of the Dunedin R.S.A. wrote regarding the territorial boundary question: Mr Tweedy (Timaru) had notified his association that he was unable to act as arbitrator in the matter. The matter had been further discussed by the Otago Executive on June 27, when the following motion was unanimously carried: That tho boundary of the Otago Provincial District between Southland and Otago remain as the boundary of the territory of the Dunedin R.S.A., and that the Gore Association be written to accordingly, with the proviso that Gore be allowed to recruit as members of the Gore Association returned men who live near the boundary line and who do not belong to and do not desire to belong to the Dunedin Association. Tire matter was left in the hands of the subcommittee previously appointed. Mr F. L. McFarlane, Lawrence, wrote stating tha everything was going well at that centre. The membership was increasing steadily, and they had raised £5O on Poppy Day as against £2B last year. An invitation from the secretary of the Bluff Returned Soldiers’ Association for representatives to attend his association’s annual reunion dinner on Saturday was received and arrangements were left in the secretary’s hands.

Mr Fyfe reported that the local territorials would be holding a smoke concert at an early date and would be pleased if a representative of the Returned Soldiers’ Association would attend to present the cup given for competition in the unit. Mr Bannerman was asked to attend. The social committee reported that it had drawn up the following programme: July 18, euchre tournament; August 1, lecture by Mr Bannerman; August 15, crib tournament; August 29, lecture by Mr Peirson.
