GORE GARDEN CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Gore Garden Club was held last evening when there was an attendance of about 30 members. The president (Mr J. Speden) was chairman. The balance-sheet showed a profit on the year’s working of £2 and a credit balance of £25 18/10.

The annual report presented by the secretary (Mr M. Fowler) stated that the membership was approximately the same as that of the previous year. Some members had left and a few new ones had joined the club. The attendance at monthly meetings had been regular and usually a fair proportion of members had been present. The year’s work included the usual routine, topics interspsersed with lectures, brief papers and demonstrations to suit the season’s work. At each meeting members were invited to ask questions on matters connected with gardening. Written questions were frequently handed in and these were answered when opened or at the meeting following. The spring and the summer shows held in the Gaiety Hall were quite successful, although visitors were less numerous than at corresponding shows of previous years. Throughout the, year seasonal notes had been systematically provided by Mr Sired, who touched very fully on all work in both flower and vegetable gardens. He invited criticism from those whose experience of local conditions had been more varied than his, and kept the notes going even when handicapped by a serious illness. The executive acknowledged its indebtedness to those who had in various ways assisted the club; to members who had acted as chairmen; to the trustees of the Methodist Hall; to whose who had given lectures and demonstrations and to the Press for reports and notices. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet the president said the year had been very successful. Despite the fact that the membership fees had been reduced, the financial position had shown a slight improvement The following office-bearers were elected: President, Mr J. Speden; vicepresidents, Mesdames J. R. Wright and R. Fisher, Messrs J. G. Duncan and H. Clifford; secretary and treasurer, Mr M. Fowler; committee, Mesdames W. J. Blackmore, L. F. Sired, R. Hamilton, J. Stevenson and M. L. Allen, Miss E. Robertson, Messrs L. F. Sired, R. Rodger, T. Brown, A. Henderson, J. Sleeman and J. Patterson., The syllabus for the coming year was considered at length and approved. A vote of thanks was passed to the secretary.
