RAILWAY WORKSHOPS

PROGRAMME FOR THE YEAR. STAFF INCREASES. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, June 29. Interviewed, Mr H. H. Sterling explained to-day regarding the taking on of additional staff at Otahuhu. This was the usual occurrence at this time of the financial year. The programme of work required to be done each year is drawn up and made to fit the finance and it was found that it could be made available as soon as the programme was approved. Each year it was actively pursued and the staff was increased as may be necessary’. The programme this year was somewhat more extensive than last year due to a larger number of replacements being made, and the improvements decided upon in the quantity and type of rolling stock, particularly in connection with trucks for the carriage of livestock and produce. Improvements of the passenger stock would also actively be pursued, particularly in the direction of removing the longitudinal seats from secondclass cars and substituting chair seats. Increased activity would apply to Otahuhu and Addington, which were the two workshops at which this class of work was done.
