FORTROSE NEWS

OBITUARY. (From Our Correspondent). The funeral of the late Mr John Stephen, aged 81, of Fortrose, took place at Fortrose cemetery on Friday, June 23rd. The Rev. W. H. S. Hine conducted the service. There was a large number of the local residents and others present, the bearers being all local identities. Mr Stephens has resided in Fortrose for over 50 years, doing contracting, ploughing, etc. He was bom in the North of Scotland and arrived in New Zealand by the ship Auckland in 1875. His son James visited him a month ago, but duty called him away. His son rose to the highest rank in South Africa in the railway service. Mr Stephens was thus one of the oldest residents in this district. Much esteemed and respected, he will be missed greatly by all who had the pleasure of his company in hearing his humorous anecdotes of his varied experiences.
