Mr D. A. Young, representing Messrs Provident Investments, Ltd., organizing brokers for the Nevis Diesel Electric Dredging Co., Ltd., is at the Grand Hotel.

The death is announced of Mr P. A. Young, who until his retirement in 1927 was stores manager at the head office of the Union Steam Ship Company.—Wellington Press Association message.

Mr W. F. Thomson, whose death has occurred, was a director of S. Kirkpatrick and Co., Ltd., for many years. He held the position of factory manager, having been 49 years with the firm. —Nelson Press Assoication message.

The Government has approved of the selection of Captain C. S. J. Duff, Adjutant of the Coast New Zealand Artillery group, Auckland, to go to England next month to attend the gunnery staff course. He will receive special training in coast defence and medium field, light and anti-aircraft artillery, states an Auckland Press Association message. In making the announcement the Minister of Defence, Hon. J. G. Cobbe, mentioned that no officer had been sent abroad since 1925-26 for similar training.

A through passenger by the Maunganui to Sydney from San Francisco, is Sir Robert Garran of Sydney, who presided over the tribunal in London to advise the British Government on "Certain questions regarding the appointment of the defence expenditure for India, states a Wellington Press Association telegram. Sir Robert, who recently retired from the position of Solicitor-General to the Commonwealth Government, made a tour of England after the tribunal had made its report. He said the depression complex seemed almost to have disappeared. On the other hand, America was still feeling very seriously the effects of the depression, but the people had great hopes for the future under the Roosevelt regime.
