CARGO OF ORANGES
MANY IN PULPY CONDITION. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, June 26. Now is the height of the Island orange season and the Maunganui which arrived at Wellington to-day from San Francisco via Papeete and Rarotonga brought about 17,000 cases of fruit, chiefly oranges from Rarotonga. A large number of oranges were landed in a very pulpy condition and will be destroyed. A big percentage of the oranges, it is understood, had been packed upwards of ten days before they were loaded and this is the main reason for their deterioration. Additional factors were wet weather recently in the Cook Islands and the fact that many of the plantations’ trees are getting old and have not been pruned properly.
