RADIO NOTES

DX TOPICS. DX conditions are still bad and' long distance reception from America is falling off. Usually at this time of year these stations are heard to advantage. Recent verifications to hand include Brussels after nine months, WGN, KTBS Ekko stamp, KDYL Ekko stamp, WOWO, WGL 100 watts, KDZ 100 watts, WCAU, WHAS Ekko stamp, WOV Ekko stamp, KOMO and VK 3QZ. KOMO state that KJR and KOMO consolidated under the same management on April 14 and they have no programme details previous to that date for identification purposes. Their card will be forthcoming if DXers can pick them up now. WGN, 720 k.c., have discontinued the issuing of cards and stamps, they send a letter only. WDZ on 1070 k.c. state they are the oldest station in the State of Illinois and the third oldest in U.S.A. WDZ has a power of 100 watts and operates from 8.0 a.m. until 5.0 p.m. C.S.T. and began broadcasting in 1921. WOWO and WGL are evidently owned by the same company as both stations are verified in the one letter. WGL is often heard on test programmes on 1370 k.c. If any DXer heard KTBS, Shreveport, on June 25 he should send in a report. This station is anxious to hear from New Zealand DXers. The 1.8. C. has notified “Radio” their intention to put on a special concert programme for N.Z. listeners at some suitable date—yet to be decided—This station is not often heard in N.Z. and this should be a good chance for DXers who have yet to log Radio Normandie Fe Camp France. Arrangements are also in hand for a programme from Juan-les-Pins and Toulouse both of France; further particulars will appear later. The special VK night was highly successful. Several members had a big catch. A new Australian station has been heard on 900 k.c. calling 3MA Mildura, His address is Sunraysia Broadcasters, Mildura, Victoria. KDYL Salt Lake City Utah on 1290 k.c. have issued a card with several views of their very fine studios. Dxers should make a point of reporting to this station and procure this souvenir. XER Del Rio has evidently increased his power.’ He is now overlapping SCL Adelaide. XER is the highest powered commercial station in U.S.A. W.S.M.B, New Orleans, on 1320 k.c. can be heard up till 5.30 p.m. Beginners on DX should try for this station. Queries. “QRN,” Invercargill, asks for the following information. (1) American on 1320 k.c. heard at 5.0 p.m.. (2) American on 1130 k.c. announced KOIN at 5.0 p.m. (3) VK on 1330 k.c. heard at 1.0 a.m. Answer: (1) WSMB, New Orleans. Signs off at 5.30 p.m., N.Z. time. (2) Perhaps you heard KVOO on 1140 k.c. KSL is the only station likely to be heard on 1130 k.c. at that hour. (3) VK 7CH.
