SEARCH FOR SILVER
POLICE ON WANGANELLA. (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, June 23. Strict precautions were taken by the police to-day to ensure no silver was shipped by the Wanganella which sails for Sydney this afternoon. From this morning uniformed police at the gangway scrutinized all going aboard and detectives also were aboard the ship searching.
SEARCH OF TAMAROA NO SILVER FOUND. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, June 23. In pursuance of the Government’s endeavours to stop the illegal export of silver coin, a thorough search of the liner Tamaroa was made to-day by about 40 members of the police force. It is stated, however, th_t they failed to find any silver coin aboard the vessel. Tlie Tamaroa is due to leave at 7 a.m. to-morrow for Southampton and London and the search was carried out before the passengers went aboard. Police searches have been made of the intercolonial vessels Wanganella and Marama, but the Tamaroa is the first Home liner to be searched. It is commonly reported that about £5OOO in silver coin was taken Home by passengers on one liner a few months ago, while in many cases the quantity ti.ken has run into many hundreds of pounds.
