WATER HEATERS FREE

ENCOURAGING CONSUMPTION OF

ELECTRICITY.

ONTARIO COMMISSION’S SCHEME. '

Toronto, May 17. To increase the domestic use of electric current the Ontario Hydro-Elec-tric Power Commission, the largest State-owned enterprise of its kind in the world, is providing and installing, free of charge to the consumer, 50,000 Water heaters in homes throughout the province. Within a year it is anticipated that about 100,000 such heaters will have been given away, the consumer paying only for the current used at a flat rate.

The purpose of this step is, of course, to establish a greater domestic market for surplus power now being produced, and it is estimated that on the average the heaters will consume each one horsepower of electrical energy. The Hydro-Electric Commission is building the heaters to its own standards and specifications, and the work necessarily will create a considerable market for material and labour.
