SAMOAN DOINGS

KING’S BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS.

(Per United Press Association.)

Wellington, June 17.

The Samoan correspondent of the Press Association writes from Apia on June 8, stating that the King’s Birthday was celebrated by public holiday on June 3, distinguished visitors being the Governor of American Samoa, Captain Landenberger, and Mrs Landenberger. Royal salutes were fired by the shore battery, also from the U.S.S. Ontario which was in the harbour. Kava was served at the function in the Courthouse and speeches made by the Administrator, General Hart, the Hon. I. Carruthers, High Chief Tuatogoloa, Captain Landenberger and a Samoan chief from Pago Pago. Wreaths were laid on the graves of British and American sailors killed during the Samoan troubles of 1899, a visit being paid to Mulinuu for this purpose.

The death occurred on June 3 of Mr Leslie Partridge, bacteriologist and chemist at Apia Hospital. Mr Partridge was only 36 years of age and the news of his death was received with genuine sorrow by the wliole community. The funeral was largely attended. A firing party fired three volleys at the graveside and the Last Post was sounded. There have been no developments of importance since the Hon. O. Nelson returned to Samoa and no trouble is apprehended. Several chiefs have been arrested for exceeding the time allowed them to visit Apia and refusing to return to their villages.

The news of the honour of the Knighthood conferred on Colonel Allen, a former Administrator of Samoa, was received with great satisfaction by the European community.
