THE UNEMPLOYED

MASS MEETING AT CHRIST-

CHURCH.

(Per United Press Association.) Christchurch, June 19.

The Acting-Minister of Railways advised the Christchurch Unemployment Committee that the department was unable to carry coal free from the West Coast to Christchurch for the unemployed and the committee decided to approach the Employment Board. A mass meeting of unemployed to protest against compulsory camps for married men will be held in Latimer Square at 11 to-morrow morning. The organizers have been arranging the demonstration for some time and an endeavour was made to keep the matter secret. During the week-end the job delegates met to complete arrangements. They expect all the unemployed in and about the city to leave their jobs and participate.

SUPPLY OF COAL

MINING BY UNEMPLOYED.

MINISTER UNABLE TO ACCEPT

SUGGESTION.

(Per United Press Association.) Christchurch, June 19.

The Christchurch Unemployment Committee at its last meeting suggested to the Minister of Mines that miners unemployed on the West Coast should be put to work at relief rates to mine coal for their fellow unemployed. The Minister’s reply was before a meeting of the committee to-day. The Hon. C. E. Macmillan stated that he had already authorized the manager of the State mine to supply coal to the relief committee at bedrock prices. He was unable to give effect to the suggestion. “I may add,” wrote the Minister, “that the miners employed at the State coal mines are not working full time and any attempt to add to the number of employees by engaging more men at relief rates would lead to results which would be far from satisfactory.”
