SPRINGHILLS NOTES

GIFT EVENING. (From Our Correspondent.) On Friday evening a very enjoyable function took place when the residents of Springhills and surrounding districts gathered in the local hall to tender Mrs G. McLeod (nee Miss Grace Robertson) a gift evening. Music for the dance was supplied by Mrs Hankey (piano) and Mr R. Voight (violin) and extras were played by Mrs R. Frisby (piano) and Mr J. West (accordion), while Messrs S. Slocombe and J. Rugg acted as M.C.’s. A greatly apnreciated son" was given by Mr Watson, Makarewa. At a suitable interval Mr Slocombe asked Mrs McLeod to accept the fine array of gifts with the best wishes of the donors. Mr G. McLeod suitably replied on his wife’s behalf. School Concert. A most successful concert in aid of Dental Clinic funds was held in the Springhills Hall recently. The plays by the school children were very well received, Master R. Dick, as the W'olf in “Red Riding Hood” causing much merriment, while a great deal of interest was taken in the spinning wheel (over 200 years old) kindly lent by Mr A. R. Chisholm, and used ’ the play “Tom Tit Tot.”

The programme was as follows: — National Anthem; instrumental trio, Mrs R. Young 'piano), Messrs J. McMastc- and D. Brown (violins); recitation, Clutha Dick; song, Muriel Frisby; songs, Mr R. Mcßae; recitation, Robert Dick; play “Tom TL Tot,” school children; songs, Mrs S. Paddon; sketch, “Mr and Mrs Mac,” Misses I. and M. Frisby; play, “Red Riding Hood,” school children; instrumental trio; character sketch, Messrs R. Mcßae and R. White; folk dance, school children; Scotch songs, Mr R. White. Mrs R. Young acted as accompaniste. Mr S. Slocombe passed-a hearty vote of thanks to the performers for the excellent entertainment they had provided. The chairman, Mr R. White, responded. . After supper the rest of the evening was devoted to dancing, music for which was supplied by Mrs R. Young (piano), Messrs McMaster and Brown (violins), R. Voight and J. West (accordions).
