UNEMPLOYMENT

GORE COMMITTEE MEETS. A meeting of the Gore Unemployment Committee was held on Thursday evening. Present: Messrs W. D. Shelton (chairman), A. T. Newson, J. Sleeman, Joseph Hunter, G. W. Whittingham, F. M. Murray, R. W. Noake, W. Faithful, A. J. Middlemiss, Rev. Orchard and E. Melvin (secretary). The secretary reported that as a result of the allocation committee’s representation, the Unemployment Board had increased the allocation for the week ending June 24, Mr Whittingham reported that along with the secretary he had interviewed the Southland executive regarding the recent decision, regarding meat issue to relief depots. It was learned that the meat to be allotted to Gore was in proportion with that issued to other centres in Southland. Mr Weenink, secretary of the committee, stated that at Invercargill the meat was issued one carcass to 12 persons, and that the relief depot there was open once a month only. In the circumstances it was regretted that an increased supply of meat would not be available for Gore.

Mr Whittingham was thanked for his report.

A vote of thanks was passed to Messrs H. and J. Smith, Ltd., the United Trading Company, A. T. Newman, G. Whittingham and the N.Z. Pine Company for donations towards the office furnishings.
