AUCKLAND CITY

RATE OF 3/11 IN THE POUND. SAME AS LAST YEAR. (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, June 15. The City Council this afternoon decided to strike a rate of 3/11 in the £, the same as last year. The Mayor in a statement referred to the amount of outstanding rates and said he was of the opinion that first mortgagees must now be called upon to pay arrears of rates on their securities, otherwise injustice would be done to those ratepayers who pay. Referring to adverse factors, he said the reduction in valuations amounted to £124,000 which, on a basis of the 3/11 rate, represented a revenue loss of £24,284. Relief works supervision cost £6BOO more than the estimate. Exchange this year would cost £36,600. These last two items represented 4jd in the £. The council was budgeting for an estimated debit balance of £12,238 and under the conditions ruling, it was considered not unreasonable to carry that amount.
