STATE PREMIERS

CONFERENCE AT MELBOURNE. CONVENTION PLAN OPPOSED. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) Melbourne, June 14. The Commonwealth Government has abandoned for the time being its proposal to hold a constitutional convention. When the question was discussed at the Premiers’ Conference only Tasmania and South Australia supported the Commonwealth’s plan. The other States supported a proposal by Mr B. S. B. Stevens that before the convention was held the conference of Premiers should deal with existing difficulties and, in effect, carry out useful preparatory' work. It was agreed that a conference should be held early in 1934.

The Premier of Western Australia, Mr Phillip Collier, indicated that he would submit the case for the separation of Western Australia from the Commonwealth to the Imperial authorities. Mr Collier implied the rejection of the case for secession by adding that after a decision was reached he was prepared to participate in any conference with the other States and later to join in a constitutional convention.
