SOCCER DEFEAT

NEW ZEALAND TEAM. GAME FULL OF INTEREST. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 9.45 p.m.) Sydney, June 13. The South Maitland Coalfields eleven defeated the New Zealand Soccer team at Cessnock by one goal to nil in a match full of interest. The teams were:— New Zealand—Zuill, Stone, Gerrard, Stenhouse, Christie, Crabbe, Ives, Blackie, Barton, Kershaw, Groves. South Maitland—McNab, Evans, Whitelaw, Porteous, Taylor, Shakespeare, O’Neill. McGarvie, James, Lannad, Kempe. James, who scored the only goal, was the only forward to thoroughly test Zuill. Just before the interval James sent in an oblique shot which Zuill did not attempt to stop. A few minutes later Zuill had to dive full length to deflect the ball out of the net. Play was open throughout. Only occasionally was either goal in danger. Ives and Zuill created a very favourable impression. Christie’s failure to move forward with the rest of the team allowed interceptions to be made and lost opportunities for the visitors, who were very unlucky not to win as they were by far the superior team. AUSTRALIANS’ TOUR TURNED DOWN. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, June 13. The council of the New Zealand Football Association to-night decided it was unable to receive a team from Australia in August and the proposal was regretfully declined. The Council hoped Australia would send a team to New Zealand in 1934. The following is the Chatham Cup draw:— July 15.—Local finals to be played at Auckland, South Auckland, Wallington, Manawatu, Canterbury, Westland, Buller and Otago. July 22.—Poverty Bay and South Auckland at Hamilton; Manawatu v. Wanganui at Palmerston North; Westland v. Buller at Millerton. July 29—Auckland v. South Auckland or Poverty Bay at Auckland; Wellington v. Manawatu or Wanganui at Palmerston North or Wanganui; Canterbury v. Westland or Buller at Greymouth or Millerton. August s.—Wellington v. Auckland at Auckland; Otago v. Canterbury at West Coast or Christchurch. August 26.—Final at Wellington.
