GORE HIGH SCHOOL
ANNUAL MEETING OF BOARD. MR E. C. SMITH RE-ELECTED CHAIRMAN. The annual meeting of the Gore High School Board of Governors was held yesterday, when there were present Messrs A. H. W. Aitken, Henry Smith, A. T. Newman, E. C. Smith, R. L. Byars, J. H. Clark, W. Gee, S. Rice and Hugh Smith. The secretary (Mr F. Young), presided at the commencement of the meeting and called for nominations fo” chairman. Mr E. C. Smith was unanimously re-elected to the chair. On assuming the chair, Mr Smith expressed thanks to the members for the cordial co-operation extended to him during the past term. He extended a welcome to Mr Henry Smith, who took his seat at the board table for the first time. Committees were elected as follows: Finance.—Messrs Rice, Clark, Aitken and Gee. Works. —Messrs Newman, Byars, Hugh Smith and Henry Smith. Hostel.—Messrs Gee and Byars. The Rector (Mr J. Hunter) reported that the school had resumed for the winter term with the roll as follows: Boys 126, girls 117, . total 243. The number of boarders at the hostels was the same as at the end of the first term. The chimney and fireplace for the boys common room were now completed, but no fire had been lit yet. “I desire to draw the board’s attention to the fact that at the end of September of this year the school will have been in existence for 25 years, and it would seem desirable that some semi-jubilee should be observed. The annual meeting of the Ex-Pupils’ Association was held last night and they decided to postpone their annual dinner until later on, so that it might form part of any semi-jubilee festivities decided upon. The association is prepared to organize suitable celebrations, but the board should most certainly have ample representation on any committee set up to arrange affairs. I should like to know whether- the board approves of recognition being given to the conclusion of 25 years in the school’s history.” The chairman said that it seemed a good idea that the semi-jubilee of the school should be celebrated in a suitable manner. The matter was referred to the Town Committee and the report was adopted. EX-PUPILS’ ASSOCIATION. ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Gore High School Ex-Pupils’ Association was held on Monday evening, Mr J. Hunter presiding over a good attendance of members. The annual report stated that the reunion showed a deficit of £1 1/-. There were 68 present. Misses L. Jopp and P. Gordon represented the association at the Southland Girls’ High School Old Girls’ Association annual reunion, and Mr Colin Harper at the Technical Old Students’ reunion. After a lapse of several years, the dance was revived and proved a huge success. There was a very large attendance and the function showed a profit of £1 10/2, which more than counterbalanced the loss on the dinner. The balance-sheet showed £4l 19/4 in the bank and 17/61 cash in hand. In moving the adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet, Mr Hunter said that while there was a slight deficit on the annual dinner, this was more than counterbalanced by the excellent dance, which thoroughly justified itself. The finances were in an excellent position, there being a sum of £4l 19/4 in the bank, while there was 17/6 in cash and assets to the extent of £3 in badges. This was a comfortable nest-egg and revealed that the association was in a strong position and able to meet any heavy demands. He was particularly pleased at the position, more so as this year would see the 25th year of the school’s existence and he would like to see some social activity by the association in connection with this function. The report was adopted. The election of officers resulted: President, Mr Joseph Hunter; vice-presi-dents, school staff, Board of Governors, and the presidents of the Ex-High Hockey and Basketball Clubs; secretary and treasurer, Miss Q. Chatterton; assistant secretary and treasurer, Mrs C. Fleming; committee, Messrs I. G. Martin, W. Smith, W. Chatterton, J. Cochrane, C. S. Campbell, H. Horrell, Misses L. Jopp, P. Gordon, M. Waddell, J. Paterson and W. Paterson. It yzas decided to hold a dance on July 12. Mr Hunter explained that the 25th year of the school’s existence would be completed at the end of September of this year, and he did not wish the occasion to r>ass by without some recognition. He would like the association to be associated with any function which might be decided upon, and suggested that the annual dinner be deferred until then. It might be possible to hold the dinner or. a Saturday evening, a church parade on the Sunday, and an outing for the visitors and a dance on the Monday.
It was decided to fall in with the suggestion, the details to be referred to the committee.
