Mrs G. C. Hamilton, Albany street, leaves by this morning’s express to spend an extended holiday in the North Island.

Mrs J. J. Green, Devon street, returned on Saturday evening from a visit to Christchurch.

Mrs D. Harvey, Halton street, East Gore, entertained a number of friends on Friday afternoon of last week. Miss J. Wyber returned last week from a visit to Dunedin.

Mrs J. A. S. Aitken, Albany street, and Mrs F. M. Murray, Canning street, were bridge hostesses during the week. A social afternoon was held in the Women’s Club on Tuesday of last week, some forty members being present. The entries in the knitting and needle-work competition were on display and were judged by Mrs Burns and Mrs C. O. Lillie. The prize-winners were Mrs J. E. Rogers (infant’s knitted singlet), and Miss Janet Rogers (pair of knitted socks). Miss Rogers also secured first prize for the tea-waggon set. During the afternoon songs were sung by Mrs A. T. Pettigrew and a one-act play “The Perfect Marriage,” by Leonard White, was read by Misses M. and S. Inder. On Tuesday evening last a large number of Charlton residents gathered at the school to farewell Mr and Mrs James Given who are taking up residence in Gore. The evening was spent in dancing, music being supplied by Ryan’s Orchestra. Vocal items were contributed by Mrs L. Wyber, Miss Merle Smith and Messrs A. Richardson and A. J. Jones. Mr S. Brigans (Mataura) played the accompaniments. Mr C. Guthrie, on behalf of the manyfriends present, asked the guests acceptance of the following gifts: a walking stick for Mr Given, two English-ware vases for Mrs Given, a handbag for Miss Ivy Given and an eversharp pencil for Master Lionel Given. With the gifts went the best wishes of all for their future prosperity. Supplementary remarks were made by' Messrs J. Henderson, F. Clearwater, I. Martin, and A. J. Jones, the last named extending a cordial welcome from the farming community to Mr and Mrs W. Given who would carry on the property. Mr J. Given suitably replied. Last Thursday evening a number of members of the Play Reading Circle of the Southland Women’s Club motored up from Invercargill and entertained the members of the Gore Women s Club with a delightful reading of C. L. Anthony’s play, “Autumn Crocus. ’ Mrs R. G. Stokes, chairwoman of the local circle, welcomed the visitors on their arrival and later thanked them for the very enjoyable evening's entertainment they had provided. Mrs A. M. Macdonald replied on behalf of the Invercargill ladies. Prior to the reading, Mrs Ritchie Crawford gave an interesting sketch of the life of the authoress of the play. The following was the cast: Herr Steiner, Mrs Stanley Brown; Miss Mayne, Mrs A. M. Macdonald; Fanny, Mrs H. R. Kingsland; Edith, Mrs C. E. Watts; Audrey, Mrs John Macdonald; Alaric, Miss May Manson; the Rev. Mayne, Mrs J. N. Armour; HerrFeldman, Mrs Hackworth; chorus, Mrs Ritchie Crawford. Those present were; Mesdames R. G. Stokes, W. Scobie, E. A. Pigeon, G. S. Finlayson, D. L. Poppelwell, H. A. Price, J. E. Rogers, J. A. Edwards, A. J. Hawke. A. T. Pettigrew, W. McAra, E. C. Smith, F. Wallis jun., A. H. Inder, J. M. Boyne, J. A.
