MATAURA NEWS

ST. SAVIOUR’S ANGLICAN CHURCH. (From Our Correspondent.) The annual meeting of parishioners of St. Saviour’s Anglican Church was held in the Band Room on Thursday evening, there being an attendance of some 30 parishioners over whom the vicar, the Rev. J. M. Simpson, presided and opened the meeting with devotional exercises. . Speaking of the adoption of the annual report (already published), the vicar expressed his gratitude for the large attendance which showed considerable interest in the affairs of the congregation. He desired to say how pleased he was to hear the encouraging report. Words of his failed adequately to express just how he felt towards the way in which parishioners in Mataura had rallied to the congregation’s assistance when things looked at their darkest. With the blessing of God upon their efforts everything had come out well. The social life of the congregation too, was very active and the work of the ladies of the guild was worthy of commendation. The attendance at this organization was larger than in any other portion of the parish and the bazaar conducted by them was really a great effort. He desired to acknowledge the services of all officers of the church and stressed the thanks of the church to Mr John Henry in his important work of lay-reader. . ' During the year, Holy Baptism had been administered on 14 occasions and eight candidates had presented themselves for confirmation. He would like, however, to see an improvement in the attendance at the weekly Bible Class. In conclusion he urged those present to remember the sick of the parish in their prayers and trusted that the large attendances, particularly at the morning service, would continue. The motion for adoption was seconded by Mr T. G. Boyd and carried. The election of the committee for the year resulted as follows: Mrs Newlands, Mrs Walker, Miss Munro, Messrs John Clark, T. Major, E. Benfel, R. Haywood, J. K. Valentine, T. G. Boyd, J. B. Taylor. It was resolved also that the committee meet on the second Wednesday of each month. A special vote of thanks to the ladies for their services throughout the

year was directed to be recorded in the minutes of the meeting.

Subsequent to the business meeting those present enjoyed a social hour. Lodge Meeting.

The fortnightly and installation meeting of the Loyal Mataura Falls Lodge, Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows, No. 7616, was held on Thursday evening, N.G. Bro. S. M. MacGibbon presiding over a moderate attendance of brethren. Several brethren

wrote conveying greetings and enclosing dues. Sick pay and medical aid accounts were acknowledged and directed to be paid. At the request of the presiding P.G. Bro. George F. Cameron carried out the duties of installing master and was assisted by several past grands, each one. of whom carried out his duties in a highly impressive manner. After being installed the officers were addressed by the installing master who urged them to

study the rules and above all, attend punctually and regularly. Each of the brethren returned thanks for being elected to the position, assuring the lodge of their best endeavours. The matter of the lodge entering for the J. T. Veitch Memorial Shield Ritual Competition was held in abeyance until next meeting. The special annual social committee reported that all arrangements were now practically complete.

P.W.M.U. The monthly meeting of the Mataura Branch of the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union was held in the church hall on Thursday afternoon, Mrs D.
