The by-election in the Hitchin constituency owing to Viscount Knebworth's death resulted: Sir Arnold Wilson (Conservative) 14,569 W. Bennett (Labour) 10,362
The figures at the general election were: Viscount Knebworth (Con.), 25,841; D. Freyer (Lab.), 8312.
