An enjoyable evening was spent at the residence of Mr and Mrs L. Sparks, Ettrick street, on Saturday when members of the Union Ladies’ Hockey Club were present at a function held in honour of a popular team-mate, Miss Eva Hope, whose marriage to Mr M. Butler took place last week. In presenting Mrs Butler with a silver cake tray on behalf of the club, Mr J. Holland (president) wished the newly-weds every happiness in the future, but said the club would greatly miss the services of Mrs Butler, who had been a prominent member of the senior team. Mr. L. Sparks (vice-president) in endorsing Mr Holland’s remarks agreed that Mrs Butler’s defection would be undoubtedly felt in local hockey circles. Last year by her consistent performance she had won representative honours, and it was considered that had she not decided to give up the game her claims to inclusion in the 1933 Southland representative team would have been worthy of serious consideration by the selectors later in the season. However, there was one ray of light on the horizon, Mr Sparks added, in that Mr Butler himself was a keen hockey player and would still continue to take the field. Mrs Butler, when rising to suitably return thanks, was received with musical honours.
