WYNDHAM TOWN BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Wyndham Town Board was held on June 5. Present Commissioners H. Hunter (in the chair), W. Richardson, F. Ball, R. G. Carson, and W. H. Johnstone. The Railway Department wrote stating that railway No 156, Wyndham, had been sold to Mr A. T. Heydon. The chairman said he understood from Mr Heydon that the deal had fallen through. Councillor Richardson said that the notification was to let the board know the date of purchase, so that it could collect the rates. The department did not pay rates. The clerk said that he paid the sanitary rate only. The Defence Department, Invercargill wrote regarding the Wyndham orderly room and advising the terms on which the hall would be leased to the board. These were: A year to year lease for five years at £5 per annum and cost of repairs by the board to be set off against the rent; the premises to be kept in reasonable repair and be insured in the name of the Crown, Boy Scouts to have use of hall when required _ and lease to terminate in case of national emergency. Councillor Johnstone: If we have to comply with all those regulations they had better keep it. The Chairman: Yes, I think so. The Department evidently thinks a big rental can be made from the hall. The board has offered to expend some £l5 in repairing the hall, and it will take some years to get it back in rents. Councillor Richardson said he considered the proposed rent only a nominal charge of 2/- a week. Under the proposed terms, the board would get the hall for the first three years for the cost of the repairs. The chairman suggested an offer of £4 per annum. It was’ decided to accept the conditions outlined, except that £1 per annum be offered as rental.

The Department of Health forwarded draft of by-laws framed by the board, and advised that as the board proposed printing its own by-laws, it would be necessary to submit a copy to the Dir-ector-General. The clerk said the Municipal Corporation had drawn up bylaws, and he thought the board could get the work done cheaper by using those. He was in communication with the Town Clerk, Gore, on the matter. The question was held over for a month.

The Southland Electric Power Board advised that it was intended to strike a rate of 15—16 d in the £ on the basis of the unimproved value. No special rate would be struck, and non-reticu-lated areas would be asked to pay onethird portion only of the general rate. Imperial Pictures wrote asking permission to install a heater in the Town Hall. The chairman said he did not think it wise to have other people’s property in the hall. The clerk tabled the balance-sheet for 1932 duly certified as correct.
