DOG TRIALS

PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIP. COMMENCEMENT AT WINTON TO-DAY. (From Our Correspondent). Interest in the activities of dog trial clubs throughout Southland has been particul'.rfy keen this season, and it is that a great deal of interest will, be shown in the Winton Club’s fr.ciire, which commences to-day and zxtends over Monday and Tuesday, in view of the fact that the South Island championship fixture, which is held at Mossbum this year, takes place in the near future. As the centre of the Southland Dog Trials’ Association it was fitting that the provincial championship trials should be held at Winton this season. On the property of Messrs King Bros, and Burke at “The Bend,” Winton, one of the most suitable runs in the home province is available. On the face of a long sloping hill, the course is an admirable one not only from the point of view of the judges and spec-' tators, but also from the viewpoint of the competitors who are given every opportunity to show the ability of their dogs. The local executive committee has left no stone unturned to make the fixture a success. To-day’s runs will include the maiden and short pull events with prizes of £3, £2, £1 and specials for local dogs attached. On Monday and Tuesday the provincial championship events, including the long pull (prizes £B, £4, £3, £2 and £1) and the Huntaway (prizes £6, £4, £3, £2 and £1) will be decided.
