FERTILIZERS
GENERAL SUBSIDY OPPOSED BY FARMERS’ • UNION COMMITTEE’S REPORT The Southland Provincial Executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union had been asked to support a request, to the Government, that a subsidy be paid on all manures instead of on superphosphate only, and at a meeting of the Provincial Executive held yesterday a report was received from a sub-committee which had given careful consideration to the. matter. The committee stated that it could not support the proposal and its report was unanimously endorsed by the executive. The full text of the committee’s finding is as follows:— That the subsidy be not extended to fertilizers other than superphosphate for the following reasons: —
(a) That the margin of profit to merchants on superphosphate is very much less than on any other of the fertilizers commonly used. (b) That in view of the difficulty the Government has in continuing the present subsidy on superphosphate any requests for further subsidies would endanger the present subsidy. (c) This committee is of the opinion that much of the propaganda against superphosphate is not justified and does not agree with the statement in a letter submitted to it that the present subsidy is of more use to the North Island and Canterbury than to Southland.
