STATE PREMIERS

CONFERENCE AT MELBOURNE. CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) Melbourne, June 9. The Prime Minister, Mr J. A. Lyons, explained to the Premiers’ Conference the Federal Government’s scheme for a proposed constitutional convention which will consist of eighteen State representatives. The convention is to make recommendations to the Commonwealth Government.

Marked hostility to the plan was displayed by several of the Premiers. The proposal made by the Premier of Victoria, Sir Stanley Argyle, for the suspension of 50 per cent, of the sinking fund payments for one year w r as rejected. The Loan Council determined to aggregate the deficits for 1933-34 at an amount of £9,000,000.
