FITFUL FANCIES

AUTUMN. There is a rich, deep note in autumn that is not found in other seasons It is the mellow ripe beauty, and the divine promise of life in death. To me autumn does not seen to be the death of the year, it is the promise of other springs, and other autumns. Of course it is damp, and cold, and at times grey but the falling leaves, gold and crimson, put other thoughts to flight. Aren’t they beautiful, these pieces of autumn’s crumbling gold? There is a sad, yet restful, feeling in the atmosphere; to me, it seems the rest that comes after pain. Somehow the atmosphere of autumn is sacred; it is beautiful and wonderful. Somehow it makes me remember these words by Vera Edminson, “God, you have made a very perfect world, Don’t let me spoil it ever any more.” God must love autumn for He has made it the deepest and richest season cf the year; a season of gladness and rejoicing. When a little wind gently stirs the fallen leaves, I know it is the combined spirits of a thousand buried autumns and, intermingled, is the promise of one more. Yes, God, You have made a perfect season. —Cousin Lesley Shand (17), Rimu.
