SOUTHERN DISTRICT

(From Our Correspondent.) A most successful function in the form of a school concert and dance took place at Quarry Hills on Wednesday June 7. Much credit is due to the teacher, Mr G. Reid, for his work in arranging the concert. Many of the performers travelled long distances to attend. The programme commenced with an overture by Miss K. C. Eastlake, followed by songs and recitations by the pupils of- the local school. Mrs Hansen was the accompaniste. A party of children from the Tokanui School then took the stage and under the leadership of Mr Hodge sang three short choruses. Mr B. Thompson highly amused the company with his song in Yorkshire dialect. A violin solo by Miss Kitty O’Brien accompanied by her sister was received with applause. Miss M. Birse gave a dramatic recitation. Miss McManus’s song was very much appreciated. A dainty rainbow step dance by Miss B. Hardcastle to music supplied by her sister was applauded, as was another item by the same dancer later in the evening. Mr H. Halbert, of Invercargill, then introduced his son Oma, aged seven, who thrilled the audience with some brilliant violin solos, the accompaniments being played by Mrs Halbert. Miss E. Niell’s Scottish song, accompanied by Mrs Macintosh, was well received. Mr Halbert and a pupil, Mr H. Short, accompanied by Mrs Halbert, were warmly applauded at the conclusion of their violin duet. Mr Martin with Mr Hodge at the piano sang a comic song. A pleasing pianoforte duet by Misses N. and K. O Brien was also well received. Mrs, Miss and Mr Thompson gave a vocal trio, accompanied by Miss M. Swan. A banjo item by Mr Incrocci succeeded in rousing the audience. _ Before the final item the chairman, Mr C. H. Lamb, thanked the public for their attendance and the performers for a very successful entertainment. After supper the hall was cleared for dancing controlled by Mr C. H. Lamb. Music was supplied by the Golden Dawn orchestra and extras were played by Misses K. and N. O’Brien and Mrs Coster and Mr D. Hayes. During the evening Miss E. Niell sang two Maori songs.
