monthly meeting. STATISTICAL RETURNS. The monthly meeting of the Southland Hospital Board was held yesterday, there being present: Mr 1. Golden (chairman), Miss Birss, Mrs Henderson and Messrs J. S. A. MeDougall, J. Miller, G. WrayttF. Trapski, A. T. Newman, H. E. Niven. W. Clark, G. Whittingham and W. M. Norman. . . . Prior to the commencement oi tne business of the meeting the chairman congratulated Miss Birss, Mrs Henderson and Mr Miller on their re-election to the board as representatives of the combined districts of the city of Invercargill and the borough of South Invercargill, Mr J. S. A. McDougall as the representative of Bluff borough and Stewart Island county and Mr A. T. Newman as the representative of Gore, Mataura, Wyndham and Lumsden. Mr Golden also took the opportunity of congratulating Mr Miller and Mr Newman on their decisive victories m the Mayoral elections of Invercargill and Gore respectively. He said he thought it doubtful if any other local body in New Zealand had two Mayors as members. Referring to the two lady members of the board, Miss Birss and Mrs Henderson, he expressed keen satisfaction at the public’s recognition of their great value on the board by placing them at the top of the poll with a vote that was probably a record. The secretary of the Southland Social Helpers’ Association forwarded cheques for £lB 10/- and £3 10/- from the recent street collection. The relief committee reported that casual relief totalling £36 1/2 had been disbursed from April 10 to May 6. Communications were received from the Unemployment Board, Wellington, regarding workers’ compensation for relief workers and the financial resources of the native applicants for relief.

The Waipiata Sanatorium Committee wrote thanking the board for its letter of appreciation of the committee’s management and advising the steps that were being taken to secure more accommodation for the male patients. A letter was received from the secretary of the 1.0.0.F.M.U., Invercargill, regarding a scheme for hospital treatment of members of friendly societies. The finance committee submitted the following comparative table of the amounts paid on behalf of the different institutions and departments for April, 1933, and April, 1932:—

The superintendents of the various institutions under the board’s control submitted statistical reports for the month of April. At the Southland Hospital 109 patients remained on March 31, 139 were admitted during the month, 135 were discharged, seven died and 106 remained on April 30. At Kew two patients remained on March 31, two were admitted during the month, two were discharged and two remained on April 30. At Gore 24 patients remained on April 1, 58 were admitted during the month, 50 were discharged, three died and 29 remained on May 1. < At the Lake County hospital 13 patients remained on April 1, six were admitted during the month, 11 were discharged, and eight remained on May 1. At Lome Infirmary 75 patients remained on April 1, three were admitted during the month, three were discharged, one died and 74 remained on May 1. ’
