MATAURA HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY. (From Our Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Mataura Horticultural and Industrial Society was held on Tuesday evening. Present: Messrs J. H. Clark (president), F. N. R. Downard, J. W. Aitken, W. P. Thorn, J. J. Griffiths, D. Russell (vice-pre-sident) and James Ingram (secretary). The Australasian Performing Rights Association wrote with further reference to the society’s license to the association. It was resolved to reply that the society accepted no liability, installation of New Council. The installation of the Mayor and councillors took place on Wednesday evening, the new council being his Worship the Mayor (Mr C. D. McConnell) and Councillors J. G. Sutherland, W. Piercy, D. A. Coster, G. McCaw, J. Ingram, C. H. Hargest, A. J. Cruickshanks, John McErlean and W. P. Thorn. Councillor Thorn was appointed deputy-Mayor. The Mayor extended a welcome to all to the council table. There were very few of the old council present, he said, and it was with a certain amount of regret that many had not decided to seek re-election. He recognized that past councils had done their best for Mataura and he hoped the work of the new council would be for what was good for the borough. Congratulations on his again occupying the chair were extended to his Worship by all the. councillors. In his remarks Councillor Ingram mentioned the absence of Mr J. W. Aitken who after seventeen years’ service had suffered defeat at the recent poll. The speaker felt sure it was not what Mr Aitken had done at the council table that accounted for his defeat, but outside influence had Deen responsible. The following committees were then set up:— FINANCE AND LIGHTING.-Coun-cillors Thom, McErlean and Ingram (chairman). WATER AND DRAlNAGE.—Councillors Cruickshanks, Hargest and Piercy (chairman). WORKS.—Councillors McCaw, Coster and Sutherland (chairman). REPRESENTATIVES ON UNEMPLOYMENT COMMlTTEE.—Councillors Cruickshanks, Hargest and McCaw. SIGNING MEMBERS.—The Mayor and Councillors McErlean and Cruickshanks. It was resolved that the council should meet on the second Tuesday in each month.
