BASIC WAGE
TEN PER CENT. CUT NOT TO BE RESTORED NEW METHOD OF ADJUSTMENT (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) Melbourne, May 6. Three judges of the Full Court of the Arbitration Court in a reserved judgment, refused to restore the 10 per cent, reduction applied to all awards of the court in 1931, but a majority of the court decided that a new method of adjusting the Federal basic wage in accordance with the cost of living be adopted by using the “all items” table instead of the “all houses” table. The court also decided that the reduction in the basic wage which was to have come into operation to-day should not apply. The immediate effect will be to increase the Federal basic wage in Melbourne by 4/1 per week, in Sydney by 2/8, in Brisbane by 4/7, in Adelaide by 3/7, in Perth by 2/4, and in Hobart by 2/8.
