SPORTING

NOTES BY SIR MODRED. Southland Racing Club’s first day acceptances are published this (Saturday) morning. Forbury Park T.C. Winter fixture concludes to-day—first race set for 11.45 a.m. Amberley Racing Club’s gathering will entertain Canterbury racegoers this afternoon. Nelson Cup, one of Maoriland’s oldest events (established back in 1882) will be run to-day.

K. Voitre heads the jockey’s list with 104 wins, while L. J. Ellis (second) has 55 successes.

The Nelson Jockey Club’s Cup fixture will extend over Monday with very useful fields.

Prince Pombal will be one of the Maoriland runners at the Moorefield meeting in Sydney to-day.

Goodwood Handicap (6f.) to-day, and Adelaide Cup (Im. 5f.) on Wednesday, are S.A.J.C. races in prospect.

The Southland Racing Club’s Winter fixture will be under review on Friday and Saturday next.

Blixten, the Sydney Night Raid Receipt colt, is being proclaimed as a Derby hope for next season.

The South Australian J.C. big meeting of the season opens to-day and extends over Wednesday and Saturday.

Southland-bred or owned light harness horses raced well at Forbury Park meeting on Thursday.

It will be noted that totalisator investment increases were recorded at Forbury and Egmont races.

During the current season 622 yearlings have been disposed of in Melbourne and Sydney for 71,052 gns.

In winning the Beach Handicap at Forbury Park Elite Bingen returned over half a century price.

The Southland Cup candidate, The Smuggler, has gone, on the right way since Riverton meeting.

F. J. McKay is due to leave the Bluff on Monday for Melbourne with Mr W. T. Hazlett’s strong team.

It will be interesting to see how the five shilling tote ticket fares at Amberley Racing Club’s meeting to-day.

On the occasion of Amberley R.C.’s last gathering the 5/- investment ticket was a great success.

When Maorilander Tea Trader won his first race in America he impressed a 10,000 crowd.

The Gore-owned gelding, Sailing Home, will be racing in open company at the Southland R.C. meeting.

Tapanui lady, Mrs W. McKenzie, owns Palantua (galloper) and Sure and Probationer (pacers).

The opening event on each day of the Southland R.C. Winter meeting next week is set for 11.35 a.m.

Consono is building up again under local trainer R. McKay, and should be ready for D.J.C. June races.

Promising Southland square trotter Teviot Downs, was unlucky to strike Olson at Forbury Park.

Game little Toreador is progressing favourably on the S.R.C. tracks for mentor R. McLellan.

Beaten (third) at Ebrbury on Thursday, Central Otago square-trotter, Golden Bingen, may race better to-day.

Southland’s contingent at Forbury Park should provide trouble for rivals in all races this afternoon.

P. Atkins, who has been very successful of late and won three times at Egmont on Thursday comes from Hawkes Bay.

Great disappointment was evinced when Pillow Fight did not run in the Agua Caliente Handicap, owing to lack of condition.

Jen, second to Copey in Egmont Steeplechase, with Okapua half a head away, is not in the Great Northern Steeplechase event.

Jen, who displayed promising crosscountry form at Egmont, ranks as an aged gelding by Autumn from Pearl Marie.

Now owned in Christchurch, South-land-bred pacing mare, Gold Tinge, classes as unlucky with seconds and fast times.

Despite heavy racing demands at Riverton and holding home tracks. Great Shot, Vcnite, and Obligement are doing well for F. W. Ellis.

The somewhat unlucky mare, Red Sunset, by Weathervane, has been galloping into condition again of late on S.R.C. tracks.

When he won Agua Caliente Handicap recently, Gallant Sir eclipsed the track record for the race set by Phar Lap at 2.2 4-5 by one-fifth of a second.

Agua Caliente track w.as faster for ten furlongs when Gallant Sir set new figures over those of the Red Terror of the Antipodes (Phar Lap).

The Silverado gelding, Silver Issue, prepared by J. A. Rowland, is growing into a useful galloper and may be a winner next season.

With Hall Mark and Heroic Lass. Mr Kellow, of Melbourne, won £4901 at the recent A.J.C. meeting Both rank as descendants of brilliant Heroic.

When the last mail to hand left America, Gallant Sir, winner of the Agua Caliente, had increased his stake earnings to 74,220 dollars.

A number of Invercargill backers supported Elite Bingen for her success at restricted prices—the right to wire investments is necessary.

In his two successes at the recent Australian J.C. meeting at Randwick, youngster Hall Mark secured £4831 in stakes—he has won elsewhere.

Endeavour Lodge mentor, J. A. Rowland, has been keeping Enwood going on the S.R.C. tracks and she appears to be displaying improvement.

Very well at present, Gold Tinge may prove difficult to head off in James Memorial Handicap (two miles), the leading race at Forbury Park to-day.

It is pleasing to note that the acceptances for the Southland Racing Club’s Winter meeting on Friday and Saturday of the incoming week, show a slight increase.

The success of colonial-bred sires in Australia this season will probably mean that the leading classic races of the future will be confined to colts and fillies. The fact that Veilmond was sent into the sale ring in Sydney recently, to be passed in failing a bid of 1000 gns., lends colour to the claim that he is touched in the wind. The prevailing unsettled state of the shipping situation will be disconcerting to Mr W. T. Hazlett and his trainer (F. J. McKay) in view of the local team being labelled for Australia. R. Bromby has been keeping Young Sentinel moving along since the Balboa gelding recovered from lameness, and the unlucky galloper should be ready for the S.R.C. meeting. T. E. Pankhurst has effected an improvement in Miss Redowa of late, and the local mare and her stablemates, Steeton and Irish Birdcatcher, are progressing favourably. In view of the fact that it may be decided to start the New Zealand-bred filly, Silver Scorn, in the King’s Cup in Melbourne next month, the conditions of the event are of interest. To be run on Monday, June 5, under the control of the V.R.C., the King’s Cup ranks as a handicap of £l5OO and a gold cup valued £lOO (the gift of his Majesty the King).; second £3OO, third £2OO out of the prize; highest handicap weight 9.5, lowest handicap weight 7.0 (one mile and a half). Entries for the race close on Tuesday next (May 9). J. E. Pike and W. Duncan, who headed the jockeys’ list at Randwick last week, with four wins each, are a contrast in styles. Pike, as a rule, sits perfectly still until it is absolutely necessary to move, while Duncan is of the more vigorous type, and though not as pretty to watch as Pike, his record leaves no doubt as to his methods being effective.

An enthusiastic lady breeder-owner, Mrs W. McKenzie, of Tapanui, secured a popular double success at Forbury Park on Thursday, when she won races with Sure and Probationer respectively, the former prepared by J. R. Waite (Tapanui), and the latter by M. B. Edwards (Christchurch). The four-year-old mare Sure is by the imported American horse, Peter Chenault, while the six-year-old mare Probationer claims imported Southland stallion Wrack as her sire. Tire winning mares are half-sisters and their dam, Our Nurse, was got by Wildwood Junr. (Wildwood—Thelma) from Imperial Polly, by Prince Imperial from Polly, a mare claimed to be of thoroughbred origin. The dam of Our Nurse, the Canterbury mare Imperial Polly, was a smart pacer, with 2.16 against her name, while Our Nurse also claimed good winning time. The dam of the Southland pair can be classed as a valuable producer and her game daughter may follow in her footsteps.

The Australian-bred sire, Windbag (Magpie imp. from Charleville, New Zealand), has been worthily represented on the turf in his native land during the season now drawing to a close. Up to date his progeny have won Caulfield Guineas, Victoria Derby, Epsom Handicap (Syd.), Doncaster Handicap (Syd.), Australian Cup, Caulfield Futurity Stakes, Leonard Stakes, Linlithgow Stakes, All Aged Stakes, C. W. Cropper Plate, and a host of events of lesser importance. His oldest representatives are only four-year-olds, but they include Chatham, Liberal, Winooka, and Topical. As previously pointed out by the writer, Windbag’s success is of particular interest in Maoriland, as he is a son of Magpie (imp. and by Dark Ronald— Popinjay, by St. Frusquin) from Cliarleville, (by Charlemagne II from Nitthsevo, by Stepniak, son of Nordenfeldt, by Musket). As the sire of Winooka, Windbag is in the public eye at present, particularly as it is proposed to campaign his brilliant son in America.

The imported stallion Colonel Cygnus, recently purchased by Mr W. T. Hazlett at the dispersal sale of Mr J. M. Samson’s horses in Christchurch, is at present located at the Gladstone establishment where his new owner’s racing string are stabled. Bred at the Hunting Hall Stud, Cork, Ireland, Colonel Cygnus is a son of Cygnus, by Sunstar—Malgalmi, by William the Third—Vampire. Cygnus was a good racehorse and has sired the winners of over £30,000 in stakes. Then, the local horse comes from a particularly stout female line, as his dam, Kish-le-Shee, is by Acclaim (son of Amphion) from Bon Vin, by Berrill (winner of the Cambridgeshire, etc.) from Beaune (a very successful matron), by St. Frusquin (one of St. Simon’s best sons) from Burgonet (a good winner and valuable dam), by Morion (Ascot Gold Cup) from Balornock, by Galopin (sire of St. Simon) from Sousie Queen (dam of Cameronian, winner of the Two Thousand Guineas) by Musket. Foaled in 1928, and a winner up to and including ten furlongs, Colonel Cygnus was only raced last season, when he won at Invercargill, Dunedin, and Timaru, and classes as a youthful horse for stud purposes. At the present time, he stands sound and well, and, if desired, in excellent condition to embark on a racing preparation, but the chances are that he will be reserved for stud services next season. In the event of being relegated to the stud he will be afforded a great opportunity to achieve success, as Mr Hazlett is the owner of a . number of the best bred mares in Australasia and observation and experience suggest that their produce from this source would be afforded every opportunity to make good under reasonable treatment, very necessary procedure in connection with the development of youthful thoroughbreds which is not always followed out — forcing youngsters ranking as a case in point. It is understood that had he desired to do so, Mr Hazlett could have passed Colonel Cygnus on at an enhanced price after securing him in Christchurch, but he had no desire to part with a well-bred horse of marked vitality and youth and excellent conformation on his side. The son of Cygnus has given his attendants no trouble since his arrival in Invercargill and they are agreed that he is a sensible horse to handle, at the same time creating the impression that if roused he would be found to be of a fighting breed, a desirable characteristic in a stallion of the first water.
