Miss H. E. Fountain and Miss D. J. Dannefeard, of the Zenana Bible and Medical Mission, who arrived in Invercargill last week during the course of their South Island tour, are the guests of Mrs W. A, Ott, Gala street. Last Monday afternoon a delightful reception was held at Mrs Ott’s home in their honour, when some sixty ladies interested in the mission had the opportunity of hearing an interesting address by Miss Fountain, who has recently returned from four years in India. The drawing room was beautifully decorated with autumn flowers for the occasion, and Miss Mary McCallum acted as chairwoman. After tea was dispensed, Miss Fountain began her talk by drawing attention to the urgent need for mission work in India amongst the women and children particularly, and outlined what the Zenana Bible and Medical Mission was doing towards meeting that need: evangelasitc work in the Zenanas and villages, establishment of schools, babies’ homes, industrial homes and hospitals for women and children. 'This mission was founded eighty-one years ago by the late Lady Kinnaird, and is the oldest women’s mission working in India. It has amongst its 400 women workers representatives of most of the evangelical churches, and is purely interdenominational in character. It also has a home for the blind at Rajpur which is the oldest existing home for the blind in India. On the medical side, it is estimated that from five to six million people die yearly from preventable diseases, the suffering involved, particularly among the women, being terrible. The awful conditions under which the women live were pointed out, and the speaker emphasized the fact that real emancipation of Indian womanhood would never come, except through the Gospel of the Lord, Jesus Christ. In this mission all hospital and medical work is done solely by lady doctors especially trained in this enormous branch of mission work. As regards the purely evangelistic side of the work, a recent survey of missions stated that out of the half-million villages in India, only 149 have a resident missionary—of the rest, a few receive regular visits, and many are still quite untouched. Miss Dannefeard, the honorary secretary for New Zealand, then appealed for prayerful and financial support for the mission, stating that the honorary secretary for Invercargill was Mrs C. J. Bradfield, Lewis street, and the honorary treasurer, Mr W. A. McCaw. These visitors are having a very busy time in the south, as elsewhere, and next Tuesday morning leave to continue their work in Otautau, Orepuki and Tuatapere, travelling in the Baby Austin car which was a gift to the mission for this work, and which is proving its mettle in no small way during the -variable weather it is encountering in the south.
