HARRIERS

ST. PAUL’S CLUB. The club season will commence this afternoon with a pack run from North Invercargill Presbyterian Sunday School Hall, Windsor street. The run will start at 2.30 p.m., and a paper trail will be laid. There are a number of good runs possible from North Invercargill and whatever route is taken it is sure to include a large section of crosscountry going, which will be a boon to those who are as yet unfit. A long stretch of road running on the first run of the season is liable to make itself felt for the next few days unless some preliminary training has been undertaken. ; The starting point for next weeks run will be announced later. INVERCARGILL CLUB. To-day wil see the opening of the local harrier season, and circumstances point to a highly enjoyable run. The club’s prospects are considerably brighter than last year and this can be traced to the activities of a few of the keen members during the summer months. The club membership has been largely increased and there should be little difficulty in obtaining a big muster each Saturday. A hopeful sign is the interest displayed by the country members in Bluff and at Greenhills, where there is every chance of a strong local pack being formed. It is understood also that Wyndham enthusiasts are forming a pack and no doubt the opportunity in the drawing up of the syllabus for visits to these centres — visits which will prove a double benefit in strengthening local interest and in the provision of new and interesting courses. A departure from the ordinary will be occasioned by the kindness of a member of the club’s supporters in offering to entertain the members after the run and this will stimulate the social side of the club’s activities which hitherto have not been regarded as a strong point. The syllabus for the first half of the season is being finalized and will be published at the earliest opportunity. Considerable attention has been devoted to this work by the sub-committee in the finding of new routes, and it is felt certain that their choice will meet with the full approval and thanks of the members. The pack this season will be under the able command of E. Moyle, who has shown by past performances his suitability for the position. The position of deputy-captains will be filled, by J. Bremer, of the Greenhills branch, who showed remarkable improvement on the track this summer, and A. Canning, a new harrier but well-known on the track. It has been decided to restrict races to the absolute minimum this year, the only addition to the list being a proposal for a relay race to Bluff- in the first half with the St. Paul’s Club, but nothing final has yet been decided as to the particulars. As St. Paul’s have also strengthened their ranks it is anticipated that competition will be keen. A step in the right direction has been the institution of a training evening during the week. The exact evening is to be fixed by a full meeting of members. To-day’s opening run will take place from the residence of Mrs R. M. Isaacs, Pomona Road, who will entertain members to tea afterwards, and all those intending to take part are requested to meet at the Georgetown terminus at 2.15 p.m. sharp.
