ANONYMOUS LETTERS
MAYOR OF CHRISTCHURCH.
(Per United Press Association.) Christchurch, April 20.
The Mayor, Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P., stated during an election address last evening that he had received a large number of anonymous letters containing serious threats against him by a revolutionary group in the city. These had been handed to the police. The revolutionary group, he said, was not a large one, but it was very angry with him for what he was doing to alleviate distress in the city. “I have received anonymous letters demanding that I cease taking up collections in the streets and cease giving out relief,” Mr Sullivan said. “When I ignored those letters I received others telling me that if I did not stop they would drag me from my bed and tar and feather me. My answer was to organize another street collection yielding £2300.”
