CONTESTS ASSURED
PROBABLE CANDIDATES
Nominations o£ candidates for the Mayoralty, the City Council, three seats on the Hospital Board, three scats on the Harbour Board and two seats on the Power Board close with the returning officer (Mr W. F. Sturman) at noon to-day. It will thus be seen that elections are assured in the case of the council, the Harbour Board and the Hospital Board, while it is known that there will also be a Mayoral contest.

TWO CANDIDATES
MATAURA MAYORALTY.
(From Our Correspondent.)
A contest for the Mataura Mayoralty is now definitely assured, two candidates having signified their intention of contesting the election. The Mayor (Mr C. D. McConnell) has definitely announced his candidature and, in response to a largely signed petition, Mr J. J. Griffiths has agreed to accept nomination.
POSITION AT WINTON
ELECTION DOUBTFUL.
(From Our Correspondent.)
Little interest is being manifested in the forthcoming municipal elections of the Winton Borough Council, for which nominations close to-morrow, and the opinion has been frequently expressed that there is little chance of a poll. At the last elections four or five candidates in excess of the required number offered their services and the interest showed in the ballot was particularly keen. However, for the Mayoral seat an extraordinary vacancy occurred. The retiring Mayor, Mr J. A. Broom, was later persuaded to fill the vacancy, but owing to ill-health he found it necessary to retire before the completion of his term and the senior member of the council, Mr W. Hamilton, accepted the position. Mr Hamilton’s attitude towards the forthcoming elections has not been ascertained, for as a result of an accident he has been confined to his bed for the last month and it is understood that he will not be able to get about for some two months yet. No one has been named as a likely Mayor, but in some quarters it has been rumoured that the present Deputy-Mayor, Councillor R. C. Stenhouse, may be a candidate for the office. Three or four members of the present council have indicated their intention not to seek re-election. In the event of an election it is expected that a number of incidents that took place during the early part of the present term will be revived, while
the water scheme that has recently been brought forward may also be the subject of a good deal of comment.
