YACHTING

(By

Spinnaker.)

With only one more race to be sailed, the positions of the boats racing for the Invercargill Boating Club’s trophies are as follows:—

A. E. Arthur Cup. (For most first places during season). Colleen 5 Huia 4 Vai 4 Una 3 Ulva 2 Sprindrift 2 Ariel 1 Evelyn 1 Suzette 1 Snipe 1 Norway 1 Rosita — Una turned the tables on Colleen last week, defeating her by a bare two seconds. There was a fresh south west breeze blowing and the course gave opportunities both for spinnaker work and for beating to windward. The handicaps were: Colleen, Norway and Una, limit; Ulva 3min, Huia 6min, Sprindrift 9min, Ariel and Rosita 10min, Evelyn llmin, and Vai 12min. Rosita was carrying too heavy a crew to do much good while Ariel was the opposite, her crew being rather light to hold her down at times. VZhen rounding the first mark of the course, Huia fouled it and retired. Evelyn tore her spinnaker when she hoisted it for the first run up to the wharf and had to use her leading jib. Had she had the big spinnaker she might possibly have won the race as she was only half a minute behind at the finish. Tire finishing times were:-—Una 4.9.30, Colleen 4.9.32, Evelyn 4.10, Vai 4.13.30, Ulva 4.14.30, Ariel 4.15.10, Rosita 4.16.18, Norway 4.25.2. Owing to a misunderstanding, Sprindrift did not complete the course. Flora, Eureka, Sea-bird, Alert, Dauntless, Sprindrift and Rosita were all at the Point during the week-end. As well as the final race for points to-day, a change-over race will be held, the draw for boats resulting as follows:—Ulva, F. Biggs; Huia, M. Pasco; Norway, G. Gough; Colleen, G. Viks; Sprindrift, V. Jackson; Ariel, G. Dixon; Vai, H. Gough; Evelyn, J. Nelson; Una, T. Townsend; Rosita, J. Hastings.

During the week, the Riverton Club held its final race for the season, Flo being the winner from scratch.
