A Wellington Press Association telegram states that Mr Richard Waine Gibbs, a director of the Bank of New Zealand, representing shareholders’ interests on the board, was to-day unanimously elected chairman in succession to Mr Oliver Nicholson, of Auckland.

Mr L. J. Schmitt, Tourist and Trade Commissioner for New Zealand in Australia, will arrive in Invercargill on Wednesday evening and on Thursday will interview exporters at the Government Tourist Office. Those who desire an interview will have to make appointments through the district tourist manager, Mr J. A. Malcolm. On Friday Mr Schmitt, who will be accompanied by Mrs Schmitt, will leave for Te Anau and the Eglinton Valley. Tire late Mr A. H. Hiddleston, a former schoolmaster, whose death occurred at his residence, Morton _ road, Invercargill, last week, was a native of Dumfries, Scotland, and came to New Zealand in the early ’eighties. About 1886 he was appointed to the Slope Downs School and after a couple of years he' was transferred to Ferndale i?nd later to the school at Mabel. While at the latter school he married Miss Isobel C. Gardiner, the second daughter of the late Mr David Gardiner, of “Stanley Hill,” Gore. He then served for periods at the Woodlands, Queenstown and Edendale schools, where he had an excellent record and became very popular with the residents of each locality. About eight years ago he retired from the teaching profession and took up farming at. Edendale. He sold his holding a few years ago and retired from active life. He was a fine type of Scotsman and a pronounced Liberal in politics. He was . kindhearted and ever anxious to assist and help those who found life's pathwaydifficult. He lost one son in the Great War and he leaves a widow, a son at Hamilton and a daughter, Mrs W. H. Preston, of Invercargill. A farewell social was tendered on. Monday evening by the members and friends of the Abbotsford Methodist Church to the Rev. A. E. Waite, who is leaving the district to take charge of the Bluff Methodist Church, states the Evening Star. The Abbotsford church was well filled, and a pleasing programme of music and elocution, was provided. Mr T., McAhan, circuit steward, was in charge of the gathering. Complimentary reference to the work of the retiring minister was made by the Mayor (Mr W. T. Smellie), Rev. A. W. Armstrong, of the Presbyterian. Church, and Ensign Allcott, of the Salvation Army. A presentation of a well-filled wallet was made to Mr Waite and Mrs Waite. Mr Stanley Waite, Miss Audrey Waite, and Master Russell Waite were also recipients of pleasing gifts, which were presented by Mr McAhan on behalf of the congregation and the Ladies’ Guild. The presentation to Mr Waite was also subscribed by the unemployed workers of the borough, in appreciation of the good work done on their behalf by the departing minister. Mr Waite has been a member of the local Relief and Unemployment Committees, and will be much missed in Green Island and Mosgiel districts.

Mr Allen Wellbrock, of Christchurch, has received word that he has been awarded an exhibition entitling him to a minimum of two years’ tuition at the Royal College of Music, London. Mr Wellbrock is a double L.A.8., having obtained his diploma for the organ in 1930, at the age of 16 years, and for the piano in 1932, and it is for. the latter performance that the exhibition has been awarded. While still a pupil of St. Andrews College, Christchurch, he was appointed organist and choirmaster of Durham street Methodist Church, Christchurch, which position he at present holds, and until he leaves for London is continuing his studies under Dr. Bradshaw for the organ and Mr Ernest Empson for the piano. Mr Wellbrock was born in Invercargill in 1914, and his mother—nee Miss Dorothy Browning, a pupil of Mr Charles Gray—was awarded a similar exhibition in 1910. There is no previous record in New Zealand of a mother and son having won exhibitions and, according to Mt Cachemaille, resident secretary in New Zealand for the Associated Board, the event is probably unprecedented in the British Dominions. Mr Allen Wellbrock will leave for London to-wards the end of this year.
