Knitting

In answer to a correspondent: Men’s Underpants G length.) sozs 3-ply wool, 2 No.lo and 2 N 0.12 needles. 5 pearl buttons. Measurements: Length of front seam to lower edge of gusset—l 4 inches. Length of leg seam—BJ inches. Work at a tension to produce 8 stitches to the inch.

Left Leg: Using N 0.12 needles cast on 114 stitches. First row: Knit 2*. Purl 1 K. 1. Repeat from * to end of row. Repeat this row for 2 inches using No.lo needles, proceed as follows:— First row: Knit plain. Second row: K. 1, P. to last stitch, K. 1. Repeat these two rows, increasing once at each end of needle, in next and every following fourth row, until there are 144 stitches on needle. Work 18 rows without shaping. Proceed: First row: K. 8, p. to last stitch, k. 1. 2nd. row: K plain. Repeat these two rows 17 times, then the first row once.

Still keeping a border of 8 stitches in plain knitting at the beginning of the purl rows, decrease once at the beginning of the needle in the next and every following fourth row (inside the border) until 136 stitches remain, ending with a purl row. Proceed: Ist. row: K. plain to last 5 stitches, K. 2 together, wool forward, K. 3. 2nd row: K 8, purl to last stitch, K. 1. Still decreasing at the beginning of needle in every 4th. row, work 10 rows (keeping a border of 8 stitches in plain knitting at front edge.) In next row make a buttonhole as before. Work 1 row without shaping. Shape for back as follows: Ist. row: K. 1, K. 2, together, K. 56, turn. 2nd. and alternate rows: P. to last stitch, K. 1. 3rd row: K. 54, turn. sth row K. 1, K. 2 together, K. 47, turn. 7th row: K. 45, turn. 9th. row: K. 1, K. 2 together, K. 38, turn. 11th. row: K. 36, turn. Continue without shaping, working 4 stitches less in each plain knitted row, until there are 8 stitches left ending with a purl row. Using N 0.12 needles, work 12 rows in rib of (K. 1, P. 1) still keeping a border of 8 stitches in plain knitting at short side of work. In next row make a buttonhole as before. Work 13 rows in rib of (K. 1, P. 1). In next row make buttonhole as before. Repeat last 14 rows. Work 2 rows in rib (K. 1, P. 1). Cast off. Right Leg. Using N 0.12 needles, cast on 114 stitches. Work exactly as given for the left leg until there are 144 stitches on needle. Work 17 rows without shaping, casting on 8 stitches at end of the last row. Proceed: Ist. row: K. plain. 2nd. row K. 1, purl to last 8 stitches, K. 8. Repeat these 2 rows 18 times. Decrease once at end of needle in next and every following fourth row (keeping a border of 8 stitches in plain knitting) until 141 stitches remain. Work 2 rows without shaping. Shape for back:

Ist. row: K. 1, P. 58, turn. 2nd. row: K. Plain to last 3 stitches, K. 2 together, K. 1. 3rd. row: K. 1, P. 53, turn. 4th. row: K. plain. sth. row: K. 1, P. 49, turn. 6th. row: K. plain to last 3 stitches, K. 2 together, K. 1.

7th. row: K. 1, P. 44, turn. Sth. row: K. plain. 9th. row: K. 1, P. 40, turn. 10th. row: K. plain to last 3 stitches, K. 2 together, K. 1. Continue without shaping (working 4 stitches less in every purl row) until 8 stitches remain, ending with a plain knitted row.

Using N 0.12 needles, proceed: Ist. row: K. 2*, P. 1, K. 1, repeat from * to last 8 stitches, K. 8. 2nd. row: K. 8, work in rib to end of row. Repeat Ist. and 2nd. 20 times. Then Ist. row once. Cast off. The Gusset:

Using No.lo needles, cast on 2 stitches. Work in plain smooth fabric, increasing once at each end of needle in every alternate row until there are 20 stitches on needle. Decrease once at each end of needle in every alternate row until 2 stitches remain. Cast off. With a damp cloth and hot iron press carefully. Sew up leg seams to last increasing. Sew gusset in position. Sew 8 cast-on stitches in position on wrong side. Sew up front opening for 1 inch from gusset. Sew up back seam. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes.
