Calder, secondary schools’ representative, resigned on account of removal from Invercargill and her place was not filled. Mr J. Holland also resigned owing to removal and his place was taken by Mr J. S. Clarkson. Miss G. Boniface, junior playing member, became ineligible on promotion to second grade, her place being taken by Miss D. Dixon. Mrs S. Batchelor’s place was later filled by Miss L. Hallamore and Mr J. S. Clarkson’s by Mrs R. A. Keast. Three special general meetings were held during the year. Affiliation was granted to three new clubs—Wallacctown, McKenzie's and Waihopai, making the total number of clubs 15. Thirty teams participated in the weekly competitions from the following clubs: Bluff, 2; Makarcwa, 4; S.G.H.S., 1; St. Peter’s, 2; Haynco, 1; McKenzie’s, 1; Kiwi, 2; St. Mary’s, 3; Rata, 3; Waihopai, 1; Pirates, 2; Exhibition, 1; Collegiate, 4; Wallacetown, 1; Kennington, 2. The total number of teams, including Central District 17 and Eastern District 11, was 58. Towards the end of the season a new sub-association was formed in the Western District with headquarters at Nightcaps. No matches were played but everything was arranged in readiness for a good start in 1933. Competitions were played in four grades, the winners being as follows: — First grade, Collegiate; second grade, St. Mary's; third grade, Bluff; fourth grade, Makarewa. The News Shield and the Royds Shield were both won by Collegiate Club. The usual all-day tournament was played on June 3. Owing to bad weather conditions the games were played indoors for the first time and a knockout tournament, with consolation for losers in the first round was played. Fifty-two teams entered, including nine teams from the Eastern District, 11 teams from the Central District and four secondary school teams. The winners were: First grade, Rata; second grade, Lochiel; third grade, Collegiate; fourth grade, Spar Bush. Consolation: First grade, Pirates; second grade, Technical; third grade, Bluff; fourth grade, Gore High School. A knock-out tournament was played in the Drill Hall on August 3, the winners being: First grade, Kia Ora; consolation, Winton; second grade, McKenzie’s; consolation, Kiwi. The outstanding event of the year was the New Zealand Tournament held in Invercargill from August 23 to August 27. Eight teams participated from Auckland, Hawkes Bay, Wellington, Marlborough, Canterbury, South Canterbury, Otago and Southland. The Southland team performed very creditably, taking third place equal with Auckland and Canterbury. The tournament was a great success from every point of view and the sum of £5O was cleared after expenses were paid. Of this half went to the New Zealand Association and half to the Southland Association. Unfortunately owing to wet weather the last day’s matches had to be played in the Drill Hall. Miss E. B. Pay and Mr L. R. Lewis represented the Southland Association at the New Zealand Council meetings. The main business accomplished was the transferring of the executive to Wellington, the allocation of the 1933 tournament to Gisborne and the consideration of the revised form of setting out the playing rules. It was decided that the playing rules be not altered for three years. Mrs R. S. Mclnnes (Southland) was elected the first life members of the New Zealand Basketball Association.

The annual fixture Southland v. Otago was played on August 22, the day before the New Zealand tournament commenced, and resulted in a draw, so that each province will hold the Southland Cup for six months. The second grade representative team played the following matches: V. Otago, lost 14—6; v. Central District (at Winton), lost; v. Central District (at Invercargill), lost 18—7; v. Eastern District (at Gore), lost 17-—lO. The following represented their province: First grade: P. Calder (Bluff), M. Wright, D. Deegan, E. Shepherd (Collegiate), M. McCurdy, M. Royds, G. Bamford, M. Shand (Rata), E. Mortimer, I. Glennie (Makarewa), F. Hinchey, J. Kelly (S.G.H.S.). Second grade: I. Egerton, N. Norman, M. Collett (Kia Ora), R. Butsbn, J. Hughes (Collegiate), J. Tyell (St. Peters). E. Norman (Kia Ora), J. Hilton, W. Clark (Kiwi), C. Atkinson (Lochiel), J. Deegan, K. Rutherford (St. Mary’s).. On Saturday, September 17, the annual function for the presentation of trophies was held. Instead of a dinner, as in previous years, it took the form of an entertainment at which the moving picture of the teams in action at the New Zealand tournament was shown followed by the presentation of trophies and supper. There was an attendance of about 200. To raise money for the running of the tournament and entertainment of the visiting players, the amount required was estimated and allocated among the various clubs, according to their membership. The sum of nearly £6O was raised in this way; £25 has been paid off the courts, leaving £5O still to be paid. In addition the courts were top-dressed, posts were set in on three courts and a cupboard fitted in the kitchen. A typewriter and duplicator were also purchased. The year ends with a debit balance of £5 12/3 and several accounts outstanding. The thanks of the association are due to the Girl Guides who rendered first aid on June 3, to the Press for full accounts of meetings and matches, and to the many others who helped to make the 1932 season a success. MATAURA CLUB. The annual meeting of the Mataura Basketball Club was held recently and attracted a fair attendance of members over whom Miss Winning presided. The annual report disclosed that the dull had not received the measure of support it could have hoped for. The club was represented in the competitions but was compelled to withdraw owing to scarcity of playing members. This year, however, the prospects appear much brighter and more enthusiasm appears to be in evidence and it is hoped that the club will enter two teams. The statement of receipts and expenditure disclosed a small credit balance and after consideration both documents were adopted. The election of officers for the forthcoming season resulted as follows: President, Miss Winning: vice-presidents, Miss M. C. Dickie and Mr C. D. McConnell; committee, Miss Smyth (captain), Miss Irwin (deputy captain), Miss McConnell (secretary) and Miss Newlands. It was resolved that two teams be entered in the B grade competition and also to ask the Mataura Tennis Club for the use of their courts as in former years. It was decided that the first practice be held on April 8,
