CALF CLUB COMPETITION

JUDGING AT EDENDALE SCHOOL. ’ On Monday afternoon Messrs D. Caldwell, Bain and R. Weir, the club’s judges, carried out the annual judging j of calves at Edendale. Although weath- j er conditions were not as pleasant as r could be desired, yet the fairly large j crowd present on the grounds were j keenly interested in the proceedings. ( In the heavy bred class of nine en- ] tries the general good quality of the j group was such that the judges found ( their task far from easy to select the ( winner. The light bred class (eight en- ; tries) was even more difficult in this ( respect, the judges expressing the opin-

ion that the calves of this class were the finest as a group they had ever had the pleasure of judging. Heavy breed prize winners were: Ernest Botting 1, Gordon Hutton 2. Light breed: Roy Herbert 1, Elaine Cate 2. At the conclusion of the club event, the judging for the local competition then took place. In this event the prizes were awarded chiefly for the ability put forward by the competitors in scoring of the calves, special additional points being awarded for: (a) general management; (b) appearance and general care. Heavy breed winners: Gordon Hutton 1 (silver cup), Ernest Botting 2 (boys’ annual). Light breed: Elaine Cate 1 (silver cup), June McFadgen 2 (girls’ annual). The senior girls then entertained officials and visitors to afternoon tea. Mr Baird, chairman of the School Committee presented the various awards and congratulated the winners on their success. He also thanked Messrs Caldwell and Weir for acting as judges in the local competition. He considered the committee were fortunate in having such intensely keen and capable men to assist them. On behalf of the committee he wished to thank the donors of the cups and books and was satisfied these awards had greatly stimulated the interest of the pupils in calf club competitions. He wished to thank Mrs George Dickson, for providing hot water and milk for the afternoon tea.
