A GRADE TEST WIN FOR WOOLSTON INVERCARGILL FOURTH (Per United Press Association.) Dunedin, February 24. The final solo events in the New Zealand Band Contest were judged to-day, the B Flat Cornet (own choice) being won by G. Christie, who won the championship on Wednesday. The bass and side drum solos were also heard. The results were: BASS DRUM SOLO. (Sight Test.) W. Woodley (Mataura Town Band) 40pts 1 H. J. Hall (Wanganui Garrison Band) 39 2 R. Allan (Timaru Municipal Band) 38 3 Also competed: C. H. Frew (Ashburton Silver Band) 36, W. Wallace (St. Kilda) Municipal Band) 32, W. Lock (Nelson Garrison Band) 30. SIDE DRUM SOLO. (Sight Test.) J. Lees (St. Kilda) Municipal Band) 40pts 1 E. Andrews (Kaikorai Band) 35pts 2 W. Tinton (Kaikorai Band) 32pts 3 Also competed: E. Harwood (Ashburton Silver Band), J. Hesford (Dunedin Artillery Band), S. Chittock (Timaru Municipal Band) 31, H. B. Briggs (Woolston Band) 30. Speaking of both the drum tests, the judge said that the competitors had been set difficult tests in sight reading, the compositions bristling with tricky and broken times. It did not necessarily follow that the best drummer was the best sight reader. The judge demonstrated at the piano the correct playing of the compositions and offered some useful hints on time signatures and also went into some of the more common difficulties confronting drummers. B FLAT CORNET SOLO. (Own Choice.) G. Christie (St. Kilda Municipal Band) “Ordische,” 84pts 1 R. Milligan (Timaru Municipal Band) “Edelweiss,” 83pts 2 H. J. T. Smith (West Harbour Brass Band), E. Kelly (Invercargill Civic Band) 75.

The judge, before commenting on the competition, expressed pleasure at hearing so much good work during the contest. In this event he had kept the marking down. In his opinion the section should be used as a sort of trial ground for aspirants for the championship honours and none save those with some chance of winning should be permitted to enter for the championship.
