MATAURA NEWS

(From Our Correspondent.) From the s.s. Rotorua at Bluff the New Zealand Paper Mills are receiving into their local mill 1000 tons of wood pulp. The delivering of this consignment from the railway to yard is giving employment to a good number of men at present. On Wednesday afternoon about five o’clock another heavy thunderstorm broke over Mataura when vivid flashes of lightning with deafening peals of thunder and accompanied by heavy rain were experienced. At various times uncomplimentary remarks have been made by those driving stock concerning the approach of the Town Bridge, and not a little inconvenience has been caused vehicular traffic by the trouble many drovers have to get sheep in particular across, and now that the freezing season is in full swing these delays are not infrequent. Some amusement was afforded onlookers on Tuesday when a small boy with a pet lamb took the initiative and calmly strutted in front of a mob with the result that the sheep went straight across, the smile on the drover’s face being indicative of .his appreciation of the small boy’s action. There was an excellent attendance for the fortnightly meeting of the Pride of Mataura Druids Lodge held on Tuesday evening, J.P.A. Bro. H. A. Price occupying the chair. The agenda paper for the forthcoming sessions of Grand Lodge were before the meeting for discussion and the lodge’s delegates instructed accordingly. Two vacancies in the offices having occurred, an. election was held to fill them, and resulted in the election of Bro. W. Cunningham as A.D. and Bro. A. J. Lloyd as A.D. Bard. The following handicaps have been declared for another cycle road race to Gore and return to be held on Saturday evening:—G. Hoffman scr, J. L. Cranstoun scr, J. A. Haigh 15sec, K. Booth Imin 15sec, W. Coster Imin 15 sec, T. H. Butler Imin 30sec, A. Shepherd Imin 30sec, A. Redman Imin 30 sec, W. Hogan Imin 45sec, R. Brown 2min. L. Shave 2min, R. Baldwin 3min, R.
