SUNDAY SCHOOL PICNIC. (From Our Correspondent.) There was a good turnout for the Church of England’s Sunday School picnic last Thursday. The day was perfect and the children and their parents and friends spent a very happy time together at Horse Shoe Bay. After lunch races were run on the sands. County Council. The monthly meeting of the Stewart Island County Council and Halfmoon Bay and Horse Shoe Harbour Board was held in the Council Chambers on Thursday last. There were present: Councillors T. Bragg (chairman), T. E. Jensen, W. T. Widdowson, W. Robertson and A. W. Traill. Applications were received for buildings permits from Messrs Brown and Lee, Invercargill for the erection of a new Presbyterian Manse on the Presbyterian Church property, Golden Bay Road, and from Mr J. H. Simmers, to carry out alteration to the dwelling of Mr G. A. Simmers, Dundee street. The permits were granted. A letter was received from Mr B. Heaton drawing the council’s attention to the need of a loading bank on the wharf. It was decided that councillors meet on the wharf for the purpose of going into the matter. It was decided to notify the County solicitors that the taking over of Rankin street by the Stewart Island County Council had been approved. A letter was received from a ratepayer drawing the council’s attention to the destruction and removal of some of the direction boards along the tourist tracks and requesting that the matter be attended to.— An application was received for an exclusive right to a mooring site for a launch in Paterson Inlet. It was decided that the Harbour Board cannot give exclusive rights to the mooring of launches in certain areas controlled by the Harbour Board, but launches moored in the waters under the board’s control must have swinging room. A motion was passed that public notice be given that the noxious weed “Rag Wort” be cut or otherwise removed from properties and road-line adjoining properties on or before February 28. A matter of importance was brought before the council when a letter was read from the Interim Secretary of the proposed South Island Tourist League, enclosing a circular and asking for the council’s support. The Council decided to give the project its wholehearted support.
