Attacks on crops by the Hessian fly have been troublesome in some districts in Ashburton County this season. The fly cuts the stalks at the first knot from the ground and patches of crop may be seen cut clean through, the stalks lying on the ground. Not one person is drawing unemployment benefit at Falkland, Fifeshire, where the main industry is making linoleum. The town has a population of 3000.
