SUMMER SHOW

PROFIT OF £361.

MEETING OF DIRECTORS.

A meeting of directors of the" Southland Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held yesterday, the president (Mr W. R. Ronald) presiding over the following: Messrs D. Marshall, H. S. Irving, A. S. Holms, W. Kennedy, D. Marshall, J. Milne, J. Gilkison, W. Clark, E. K. Sim, A. Campbell, S. T. Evans, T. E. Paterson and J. Young. Mr D. Marshall reported on the representations made to Messrs D. Jones and J. Begg regarding railway freights on the carriage of live stock. He urged the association to continue its effort to have freights reduced, instancing the heavy changes imposed on farmers under the present regulations. The secretary mentioned that freights had been reduced by 15 per cent, according to a statement in that morning’s paper. Mr Sim suggested that special low rates should be allowed for the transference of stock from one province to another. Possibly special stock trains could be run. It was decided to send a letter to the Prime Minister embodying these suggestions. A letter was received from Mr W. Y. Dickie offering suggestions for improvements in the arrangements at the Summer Show.

It was decided to bring the matter up again at a later meeting and to invite Mr Dickie to be present. After reporting on the district fat lamb competition the secretary said that the opinion had been fairly freely expressed that the competition should be held earlier, early in January, late in December or even at the Summer Show.

Members agreed that it would be advisable to hold the competition at least a month earlier than this year. Mr A. M. Weir wrote stating that he had been deputed by the executive of the Herd-testing Association to approach the A. and P. Association executive with a view of holding a “Marked Calf Fair” on the Showgrounds about the end of February or early in March. This would be the first fair in the South Island, and prospects for a big entry were very bright.

It was decided to fall in with the proposal and a committee was-appoint-ed to make preparatory arrangements.

Summer Show.

The secretary submitted a financial report on the Summer Show, with comparative figures for 1931. The report disclosed that the gate money in 1932 totalled £Bl2 19/- as compared with £822 16/9 in 1931; the evening entertainment realized £177 15/6 (£6l 10/- in 1931); sale of space £157 (£195 11/-); entry fees £358 (£344); privileges £4O (£40); donations £174 4/- (£256 11/-); catalogues £23 11/9 (£25 12/6) —a grand total of £1750 15/- as compared with £1755 11/3 in 1931. The expenditure totalled £1389 11/10, leaving a profit of £361 3/2, as compared with £315 0/8 in 1931. Mr Gilkison mentioned that the profit of £361 concerned only the Summer Show and was not the profit of the association for the year. There were many standing charges to be taken into consideration. “It is a very satisfactory return for the show,” he added, “but the public should not be misled into thinking we are making a lot of money.” Members expressed gratification at the financial result of the show, the work of the president and secretary being eulogized.
