The Invercargill horses engaged at D.J.C. Summer meeting leave for Wingatui tracks to-day.

The Great Northern Foal Stakes classic is run on Monday, with Great Northern Derby set for Jan. 2.

Ex-Maorilander H. B. Lorigan, reported to be leaving Sydney for Melbourne, will remain in N.S.W.

Red Sun weakened in the To Awamutu Cup contest, but may still win a race at Auckland.

As Autopay is sprinting brilliantly at present, it is interesting to know that W. Broughton shortly pile's him.

Autopay’s mission is now disclosed to be the Fitzherbert Handicap at Manawatu on Monday next.

South Island horses appear to hold strong claims on the Auckland Cup and Railway Handicap races.

The youngster by Grand KnightRachael, recently sent to Sydney, will race for H. B. Lorgan there.

Provided age has not dimmed her lustre, Red Sea will strip well at Wingatui on Monday next.

Tigerism is to be sent north for Auckland Cup and P. Atkins will ride him at 7.4, including 41b over.

On his trip to Southland with Tip Tree, J. W. Jennings will also be leading jockey for S. Barr’s team.

Christchurch lightweight, W. H. Jones, is expected to pilot Steeton and Lady Topsy at Wyndham races.

Louis Bingen will represent the square trotting brigade in Gore Trotting Club Handicap on Monday.

The principal events at Waikouaiti and Oamaru have each attracted fields of 14—IJm. and one mile.

Trained by H. Gray, Weatherwise, by Southland sire Weathervane, is expected to Taco well at Auckland meet—ing.

During the Cambridgeshire Week (four days) at Newmarket (Eng.) a first fancy did not score until the 21st event.

It is computed that during the Cambridgeshire Week at Newmarket the bookmakers wen £600,000 in public money.

Known as the crack North Island jockeys’: schoolmaster, cx-rider R. G. Hatch, served his apprenticeship with F. Higgott. . ,

Christchurch horseman. B. H. Brodie, will be riding at the Dunedin, Waikouaiti and Oamaru holiday meetings.

Mr G. Logan, of Riccarton, who has purchased Locksley, by Arrowsmith, will prepare the gelding himself.

Several S.R.C. trainers have been within their rights by trying out their pupils under break of day conditions.

D. Marks will take Fleeting Glance, Drumfire and Silent Flight to southern North Island meetings for Sir Charles Clifford.

It is on the cards that racing at Dunedin next week will prove beneficial to several S.R.C. track trained horses.

Teels and Ail Humbug, winners at Waipa, will not be re-handicapped for Auckland Cup and Railway Handicap respectively.

It is not disclosing stable secrets to state that many southern trainers have eyes on Trial Plate Handicap (5f.) at Wyndham.

The totalisator will not be opened on the square trotters’ Free-for-All, flying start (11m.) at Addington February meeting.

The Rules of Trotting do not permit of “flying start” investment events, hence the invitation race for trotters will be a ninth event.

'Should the trotters’ Free-for-All prove successful the N.Z.M.T.C. may proomte a flat-footed start contest under similar conditions at Easter.

The “out-door” patients from Endeavour Lodge, Red Lance, Lochlaggan and Hot Tea appeared to be doing well yesterday.

At Belmont Park, Perth, on Dec. 10, the crack W.A. colt Olympian avenged his recent defeat by winning the Belmont Guineas race.

C. Emerson trainer of Concentrate, is on his first, visit to Auckland since he won G.N. Foal'Stakes on Surveyor, away back in 1918.

It has to be remembered that in the last Wellington Cup (IJm.) Jaloux ran Compris to a head in the Australasian record time qf 2.29. —

It is now announced that Great Star (7.4) will definitely contest the Auckland Cup on Monday and that R. Coveney will be the jockey.

G. Jones reported seriously ill in Melbourne, trained Sasanof, Chortle, Nigger Minstrel, Commendation, and seevral noted jumpers in the past.

It will be gleaned from the list of acceptances that’the field" for the open sprint, President’s Handicap, at Wyndham., will be a.record one of twelve.

tfiilds bf eleven eligibles 'for Wyndham'Cup and a dozen for the leading sprint race on January 2 at W.R.C. meeting .are distinctly encouraging.

The race put up by Silver Ring in Akaroa Handicap (1}) at Riccarton on

Saturday has evidently encouraged his connections to declare for a start in G. Derby. An unusual number bit youthful light harness horses for Southland claim en-? gagements in the Trial Handicap at the Gore T.C.’s Annual meeting on Monday. The Wyndham Racing Club’s Committee of Management have every reason to be satisfied with an acceptance total of 94 from 116 entries for their meeting on Jan. 2. When disaster overtook him recently, H. Gray (nine winners) was on even terms with H. and A. Cutts and A. Cook on the’' trainers’ Maoriland premiership list for this season. According to the N.Z. Referde official list of winning horsemen, K. Voitre heads the table with 33 wins, while L. J. Ellis is runner-Up with 26, then A. Eastwood 23. ■ ■ . The Auckland Trotting Club’s Summer fixture of next week will open on Tuesday (Dec. 27) and extend over Thursday and Saturday to provide keen interest for South Islanders. Southland will be strongly represented in the Maiden Stakes (7f.) at the Dunedin J.C. Summer meeting on Monday with Chief Light, Fair Vision and the juvenile filly Amelita. If Palermo is ever to stage a comeback, he has been afforded a rare chance in D.J.C. Federal Handicap (6f.) under B.2—the fact that he has trained on is a point in his favour. The Australian J.C.’s Summer meeting opens at Randwick this afternoon, when the Villiers Stakes will be decided over a mile, and on Monday the Summer Cup (Im. 5f.) will be run. Quite a number of useful performers from various North Island centres will be found taking part in the Taranaki Jockey Club’s Summer meeting on Monday and Tuesday. It has been decided not to race Red Heckle at any of the immediate North Island fixtures, and, with no southern holiday claims in prospect, he will be reserved for Trentham next month. Importance, trained at Riccarton by A. S. Ellis, has recovered from her recent poisoned limb trouble, and will be raced at the Waikouaiti R.C. and Oamaru J.C. fixtures. On Thursday morning at Riccarton, Niggerhead who claims southern engagements, finished better than Starshooter over six furlongs in 1.19 3-5. He is an improving customer. “Sportsman” is informed that according to the official race-book and other sources of information, the old system of only two dividends and £1 and 10/tickets will be in operation at the meeting referred to. Latest information from Christchurch is to the effect that imported _ Peterwah is to be permitted to. take his place in the square trotters’ Free-for-All at the February fixture at Addington. In a recent work-out at Auckland the American stallion stepped two miles in 4.35. Reporting Tuesday morning’s Riccarton proceedings, Christchurch Press remarks:—“Chief Light went well in covering six furlongs in 1.16 3-5. This son of Chief Ruler and Illume has grown into an attractive-looking gelding, and should soon make good.” Christchurch Times of Fridav remarks:—“A. McAulav will leave to-day for Wingatui with Nightguard and Water Polo, who may race later at Oamaru. They are very well, and Nightguard requires only average luck to win a race on the southern trip. While many clubs in the Dominion are experimenting with different systems of totalisator betting, the Auckland Racing Club and the Auckland Trotting Club will adhere to the old method of distributing dividends at the approaching holiday meetings. Recently returned from America, Mr D. J. Davis (of ,fhar Lap fame), now in Auckland, is reported to have expressed the opinion that his recent purchase. Pillow Fight, will have a comparatively easy task in the Great Northern Derby. The AustralianAmerican owner, who has never seen Silver Scorn race, may be correct in his forecast, but he will probably find that the Night Raid gelding has the hardest part to do. It mav also be remembered that Berate, Gold Ring and Gold Trail are also in the Derby. The writer is not aware of how F. W Ellis views the chances of his pupil, Red Sea, in her Otago Handicap engagement on Monday, but jt would appear to the writer that critics who have declared her unbeatable are in haste to air their views. Of late, the daughter of Valkyrian .appears to have slipped to some extent owing to weight of years, and, under the circumstances she may find her task a very difficult one, particularly as several of her lightly-assessed rivals are of more tender age and promise to stay on welt She will leave here as fit as hands can make her, and, with L. J. Ellis in the saddle, will have the advantage of superior pilotage by the way, and these facts will be reassuring to her numerous followers.

Southland owners and trainers are seldom represented in public by two-year-olds prepared in the home province, but local mentor F. J. McKay will introduce a promising youngster to the turf at Wingatui on Monday—that is in the event of the track providing firm going for the Dunedin Handicap, two-year-olds (5f.). The colt from the Gladstone establishment, who will compete in Mr W. T. Hazletts colours, is a beautifully-bred young racehorse, as he is a son of Night Raid from Dazzling Light (sister to Razzle Dazzle) by Kilbroney from Simper. Racing as Dazzling Raid, the local aspirant for flat-racing fame is a commanding thoroughbred, but as yet somewhat overgrown and nardly developed for the sternest of galloping tasks, hence he has not been hurried in his preparation, but in the course or time'he should furnish into a very fine horse. He moves attractively and possesses the instinct to race to a marked degree, while he is level-headed and a straight goer. Under favourable track and weather conditions he may trouble his rivals at Wingatui, and on appearances he will certainly command attention.

After following, his .• spring, preparation on the spot at Riccarton for some months following,on,-the ; Grand National fixture in/August, the writer came to the conclusion that Jaloux could not be got ready in time to play his part to perfection in the New Zealand Cup in November, and so it proved, but he caused surprise by finishing in fourth place. It was a very encouraging performance, indeed, and as he has made marked progress since the spring, it is up to a hitherto very unlucky racehorse to put forth a supreme effort under 7.8 in the Auckland Cup on Monday, and, if beaten, compensate for defeat prior to the close of the four days’ gathering at Ellerslie. Last year he finished‘fifth in the‘Cup, at Ellerslie after ' being' prominent all the way, accounted for' the Siiminer Cup on the second day, and headed all but Great Star in the Grandstand Handicap op the concluding day. .Compris just beat him in the Wellington Cup, run in record Australasian time and he next finished third in the Great

Autumn Handicap (IJm.) at Riccarton, under,B,3, to Ram 0.7.5 (winner) and Shatter (7.5), the ..verdict being a neck • and haf fe' <-The' six-year-old Sutala—Egotism gelding reads well at : Ellerslie.,

At the Auckland Club's track on a recent morning, Mr J. R. McKenzie’s mare, May Chenault, reared up and fell backwards, landing upon her driver, G. M. Mouritz, who had a lucky escape from injury. The sulky was damaged, and the mare was taken in again, to appear later and pace a mile and a quarter in 3.6 2-5, doing her part well. May Chenault accompanied Taxpayer to Auckland, and is engaged at the approaching meeting, at Epsom.

The well-known North Otago sportsman, Mr.-Malcolm, died, .on Thursday at his home near Oamaru. The late Mr Allan was a flat-race jockey and was among the sudeessful horsemen in 1881 when he won the Dunedin Birthday Handicap on Adamant, and afterwards scored in a number of events, including the Dunedin Cup of 1882, on Lady Emma. loiter he became interested in trotters and pacers and trained and raced a few horses with success. For many years he has been engaged in sheepfarrning, but has always been a keen admirer of both sports.

A “racing” wedding was celebrated in St. James’s Old Cathedral, Melbourne, on December 16. Miss Frances Dorothy Sheil, owner and tr ainer of Precocious, winner of the 1932 V.R.C. Grand National Steeplechase, was married to Mr Frank- H; Dexter, sporting editor (“Doncaster”) of the Melbourne Argus. Miss Sheil is a daughter of Mr E. V. Sheil, a pastoralist and racing owner-breeder. Mr Dexter is a son of Mr Jack Dexter, well known to many New Zealand racing folk as “Pilot,” of the Sydney Referee. GORE TROTTING GATHERING. THE WINTON CANDIDATES. OKLAHOMA AND JUST SHANDI WELL. FORM WILL BE INTERESTING. (By “Stopwatch.”) Winton, December 23. Monday, it is to be sincerely hoped will spell sunshine, for the Gore Trotting Club deserves a ray of such fortune for its annual fixture for v/nicn record fields will parade in the various events. Good racing, is bound to be the order of the day, and the form that will be disclosed will be highly interesting in view of the W.T.C. fixture on Thursday and subsequent gatherings. The local contingent for Gore is numerically not a strong one, but one that should play an important part in the decision of a number of the events. The Limehills trained square-trotter, Edwin Bingen, has not had a race as yet this season, but the son of Nelson Bingen is in particularly forward order. He °is a first dass trotter, and in his initial • season last year . shaped convincingly/ ‘ t ■ Single Lee is doing good work at Forest Hill under J. Stewart. The Lee Norris gelding, who has disappointed in the past is in. good order. He is a stout pacer, and although his wayward habits at the barrier have been checked, the half-brother to Nelson’s Victory ' is liable to go up in the air at any stage of the journey. S. A. Edward’s representative, Oklahoma is in two races, but of! 36 yards in the Trial Handicap, with 28 on the front, his prospects of getting a good run are not very bright. The halfbrother to Cranlrigh has been doing good work on the Winton track, and as he is very well nt present and has the ability, he should be to the fore at holiday gatherings. His. win in saddle at the W.J.C. fixture was convincing and his presence in the President’s Handicap (saddle) at Gore will be felt when it comes to the* business end of the race. Prairie King will be seen out at Gore and it is quite on the cards that Thorley Wallis’s representative will be in at the death. The Erin’s King gelding raced encouragingly at ■ Winton _ last month and a mile and ai-quarter journey nihx.bo td his likjrig.' He is m rare buckle just how. ' Just Shandi’s mission will be the Christmas .Handicap, but the Wintontrained geldiiig will meet a better class of horse than he has done in the past. Although he has been given very little fast work he is a fit horse, and has thrived on slow pace work. His impressive win at the W.J.C. fixture, when he registered 3.27 1-5 for a mile and a half will have earned him a good number of friends. He v ill be a doubtful starter in the Winton Trotting Cup if he does not get the judge’s decision in his Gore engagement. Nelson Pointer, who won at the G.R.C. meeting in a manner that suggested higher accomplishments is also an entrant in the Christmas Handicap. The Nelson Bingen horse is sure to go a good race, and bis forward condition should stand by him Sunny Gold, from F. Langfords stable has a big hurdle in the Mataura Handicap, in which he is giving 132 yards away. However, if he choose to do it right, he would soon overcome his handicap. He is a brilliant squaregaited performer, but apt to go up in the air at any stage. His work of late has been promising. Sunny Nelson, is another local square-gaited performer in the Mataura Handicap. He is a maiden performer, not brilliant, but is a solid trotter. Suncross is Stan Edward’s representative in the Gore Cup. A couple of season’s ago the Sungod mare paced good times, and she is one that is liable to come to the'fore ,at any time. She has accomplished serviceable track work of late, and is sufficiently forward to run a reasonably good raceThe -big fields make the public’s task a difficult one, but horses that njay race well are:— Croydon ■ Handicap: Kamaldar, Earl Bingen, Lee Boy. Trial Handicap: Black Shadow. Chechacho, Single Lee. Telegraph Handicap: Ayr Lass, Quita, Weary Voyage. Gore Trotting Club Handicap: Blue Mountain, Red Spur, Great Chenault. Christmas Handicap: Girvan, Just Shandi, Nelson Pointer. Mataura Handicap: Lee Boy, Earl Bingen, Paul Bingen. President’s. Handicap: Oklahoma, Anthem, Quita. Final Handicap: Willow Wave, Godetia, Gumdigger.. , . Of the -field of 18 set down to contest the Gore Cup the Oamaru gelding, Red Spur, from Jock Henderson’s. stable, will be elected a, prppounced favourite, .if public.opinion is.,adhered . to. Gumdigger,"Blue Mountain and Great Chenault will probably be the best supported Of the remainder, although there is bound to be votes for Erin’s Fair, Godetia and Seaworthy. Widespread interest will be evinced in the race, and as has been the case in past years, the winner will probably go on to accomplish higher honours. To many, Red Spur looks to be a warm proposition for thq valuable Gore- Cup, but in the opinion of the writer the Oamaru gelding has the hardest part to do to dispose of Southland’s foremost performer fast season, to wit, the Wyndham mentor E. Todd's representative," Blue Mountain. Admiftedly/BlUe. Mountain has not had< rdice yet this season, but there; always has and always will he an inclination to overlook, local candidates hi favour of northern invaders. The Wrack gelding Red Spur is no doubt a Capable sort, which he proved as a three-year-old last season when he won three races, including a double

at the Forbury Park winter meeting, and did so in an impressive manner, registering 3.24 2-5 for a mile and a half. This scason'he won at the South Canterbury meeting in October, but failed dismally in his next outings at Forbury.. He has not raced over a two-mile distance, but his 3.24 2-5 mile and a half at Forbury was convincing, for it was done on the bit. According to reports from Oamaru, Red Spur’s name was coupled with the Gore and Winton Trotting Cups before nominations were called for, while it is said that the connections of the gelding think brightly of his chances. Jock Henderson, who trains the Wrack gelding, won the Gore Cup in his own colours with Tommy C in 1913. Blue Mountain was not only the most con-, sistent of Southland’s light harness brigade last season, but his exhibitions were characterized with brilliancy. Last season the son of Blue Mountain King raced as a four-year-old, and in thirteen starts he won on three occasions and secured five minor placings. At the barrier, Blue Mountain was wayward and in practically every start he lost a good deal of ground. At Invercargill he gave away an almost impossible start to win a mile and a half by eight lengths in 3.31 1-5, while in a mile and five furlong race at Winton after looking to have no possible show with a mile to go, he was just pipped for second. Blue Mountain is now in the Wyndham mentor, E. Todd’s, stable, and as Todd is Southland’s foremost light harness trainer, the chances of his charge in the Gore Cup must be fully considered. With Satin King in 1930, the Wyndham mentor won the Gore and Winton Trotting Cups, and not only did he set up a record by winning the G.ore race in 4.36 4-5, but in annexing the Winton Trotting Cup in 4.30 1-5 he established a two-mile record for Southland. Last season Todd drove Sunny Morn into second place behind Gold Country in the Gore race, while he also drove Nelson’s Victory into second berth in the Winton Trotting Cup. Red Spur and Blue Mountain are both off 36yds. Gumdigger, C. S. Donald’s representative, may race well off the front. In four starts this season he has secured a first, a second and a third. Great Chenault is another likely northerner. Gore followers give the locally-trained Godetia a show, while Erin’s Fair is another local candidate that may surprise. The Erin’s King gelding can be relied on to go a good race if he gets a decent passage at all. The eighteen acceptors comprise a particularly strong field, and one thing that can be assured is a decent race. It will be surprising if Red Spur and Blue Mountain do not fight out the issue. To the writer’s mind the Cup contest will be surpassed only by the Christmas Handicap, for which 12 acceptors of an even and good standard, are listed. The result of this event will be even more interesting in view of the fact that four of the limit acceptors are in a tighter class at the Winton meeting, to wit, the Winton Cup. The northern invader Girvan looks the nick and, if successful in this event, should have a good show in the Winton Cup off the front. Just Shandi. the Wintontrained gelding, is one that may trouble Girvan, as the John Dillon gelding is in good order after his win at the Winton J.C. meeting. Another local candidate in the Nelson Bingen mare, Nelson Pointer, must not be lost sight of, while William Tell is another on the limit who recently won in convincing fashion. Wee Scotty off the front will also be in the hunt, while of the backmarkers, Grey Girl looks the best. THE DUNEDIN FIXTURE. WORK AT WINGATUI. YESTERDAY’S PROCEEDINGS. (From the Dunedin Evening Star.) A very strong gale of wind was against fast times being recorded at Wingatui yesterday morning, and this was particularly the cause of so few horses being sent against the watch Nightly had Night Lad for a companion over half a mile on the course proper, the pair running 54sec. The former is a good-looking two-year-old out of Miss Muriel, whose death was reported last week. ‘ Princess Argosy was the only one of C. Gieseler’s team to gallop, and she ran half a mile, the last three furlongs against the strong wind in 43sec. Water Power jumped off from the mile, post on the tan track, and ran the three furlongs from the seven to four-furlong posts in 36sec. She was then joined by Brown Pearl, and ran the last half-mile in 53 l-ssec. It was a pleasing gallop, and if the course should be yielding on Monday Water Power will take beating in the Otago Handicap. The only other gallop of importance was recorded by Fair Exchange, who ran a mile on the tan track in Imin 47sec. All the other locally-trained horses engaged at the meeting were given from half to strong work on the plough track. THE AUCKLAND MEETING. GALLOPS AT ELLERSLIE. RAIN IMPROVES TRACKS. (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, December 23. The weather was fine for training operations at Ellerslie before breakfast, but afterwards steady rain set in. However, it was an off morning and there was little doing. The rain will certainly improve the going for the ground was very hard after the long dry spell. The No. 3 grass track was available and Fast Passage was worked once round, running the last three furlongs in 39sec. Princess Doreen sprinted three furlongs in 38 2-ssec. She pulled up well and is in first-class condition. Guarantee strode over six furlongs in 1.26 2-5, the final three in 40sec. All the other visiting horses did pace work on the sand and tan tracks. Silver Ring, who arrived yesterday, was allotted strong pace.work, moving very freely. He is to contest the Railway Handicap and the Great Northern Derby. Gold Trail was also out doing useful exercise. One knee is still slightly enlarged, but it does not appear to affect her. . , , , Blacksmith was schooled over a couple of hurdles, showing a slight improvement on yesterday. Carfex, Hight Pitch and King’s Archer have arrived. LATEST SCRATCHINGS. (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, December 23. All Supreme was scrached to-day for all engagements at Ellerslie. Imamint has been scratched for the Robinson Handicap. WAIKOUITI RACING CLUB. AMENDED ACCEPTANCES. (Per United Press Association.) Dunedin, December 23. Ranelagh 8.3 was omitted from the Waikouaiti Cup acceptances; Iva De Oro, scr, from the New Year Trot and Hurlingham 9.3 from the Orbell Stakes. Hurlingham was not an acceptor for the Cup.
