VAGRANT VERSE

CHRISTMAS SONNET: PAX. (Written for the Southland Times). From Bethlehem’s holy hills had passed the day, And silence slumbered on the fields of night; When o’er a stable rude, from the far height, A star empyreal filing its arrowed ray; There, on a weary waiting world’s dismay, Celestial Love was bom, a dark world’s light, A helpless babe, yet strong with mightier might Than earth’s proud monarchs wield to pass away. O brother men of every race and clime, The Prince of Peace for whom the world-worn pine, Cradles among the humble and the ]soor; Rejoice, be glad, list to the Christmas chime, The human now is one with the divine, Peace and goodwill now and for evermore. —H. P. KELK. Dunedin, December 21, 1932.
