The Union Company’s coastal freighter Waipiata from Dunedin berthed yesterday morning a little before ten o clock and afterwards began discharging and loading general cargo. She is expected to complete to-day and sail for her usual northern ports via Dunedin. Messrs J. G. Ward and Company advise that the Federal steamer Northumberland is due to reach Bluff on January 3 in ballast to load for West Coast ports of the United Kingdom. On completion the vessel will sail for New Plymouth. The Federal Line steamer Surrey, which is due at Bluff on January 14, will commence loading for West Coast ports of the United Kingdom, sailing on January 20 for Port Chalmers and northern ports to complete. , „ . Messrs H. L. Tapley and Company advise that the Storm, on her usual run. will arrive at Bluff on January 9 to load Southland produce for northern ports, sailing for Dunedin the same day. The Government motor ship Maui Pomare, which arrived at Wellington on Tuesday from the Islands and Lyttelton, is scheduled to leave the northern port on January 10 for Apia and Niue Island to load fruit for Lyttelton and Wellington. She is due at Lyttelton on January 30. The Union Company’s motor liner Aorangi, from Sydney and Auckland, left Suva last Friday afternoon for Honolulu and Vancouver. She is due at Vancouver on December 29. A very large cargo of New Zealand produce was taken by the Shaw, Savill and Albion motor ship Karamea, which left Auckland last Thursday evening for London and west coast ports of Great Britain, via Cape Horn and Las Palmas. The vessel loaded a total of 101,000 boxes of butter and 26,500 crates of cheese at New Zealand ports, the figures for Auckland being 82,000 boxes and 7000 crates. In addition she carried this season’s wool, frozen meat, hides, tallow, casein and other primary products. The shipment was one of four to be made from Auckland to the United Kingdom within two days. On December 14th the Shaw, Savill and Albion liner Mataroa sailed with 100,000 boxes of butter and 21.300 crates of cheese, of which 78,100 boxes and 6768 crates were from Auckland, while the same day the Commonwealth and Dominion Line motor ship Port Fremantle took 35,000 boxes of butter and 22,600 crates of cheese, all of which was loaded at Auckland. What is -believed to be a record passage between Auckland and London, via Cape Horn and 1 Dakar, has been completed by the New Zealand Shipping Company’s motor ship Opawa, says the Wellington Post. The Opawa left Auckland at 2.20 p.m. on November 10 and arrived at London at 1.45 p.m. on December 14. It is not known how long the Opawa stayed at Dakar, which is on the west coast of Africa, for fuel, but the voyage was one of 34 days. To escape the Panama Canal dues, ships proceeding Homewards from New Zealand have recently taken to using the Cape Horn route, and-records on the route are still in the process of formation. However, the Opawa’s performance will take a fair bit of beating, although it is likely the Otaio and Orari, sister ships to, the Opawa. could '.repeat the performance. The Opawa has a number ot fast passages to her credit. On one trip, in which she made a record for the Glas-gow-Auckland, via Cape of Good Hope route, she maintained an average speed ot 16.2 knots between Glasgow and Dakar, and an aevrage for the .whole voyage of 16.02 knots. The distance’ covered was 13,620 miles, and the actual steaming time 850.25 hours. The Opawa on this occasion was in ballast, but when loaded on a previous occasion she maintained an average speed of 15 knots between Liverpool and Auckland, via the Cope of Good Hope. For a call only at Dakar, the Opawa made a record passage of 34% days when she arrived in London from Wellington -in August of last year. The Opawa, which was launched early last year, has a gross tonnage of 10.107. WITHIN WIRELESS RANGE.
